Q and A with St. Mary's of Lancaster C Brett Helmbrecht

Dan Cevette
New York Scouting Director

Name: Brett Helmbrecht
High School: St. Mary's of Lancaster
College Commitment: Niagara CCC
Position: C

PBR New York sat down with catching prospect Brett Helmbrecht for a little question and answer session.

PBR: How did you prepare for the 2014 HS baseball season?

Helmbrecht: I followed a workout program in the gym, hit 4-5 times a week, and I played long toss to build up my arm strength.

PBR: Tell me your strengths and weaknesses as a player.

Helmbrecht: I feel my arm is a big strength with my pop times near and around 2.0. I am a patient hitter as well, and take pride in being a sound defensive catcher behind the plate. Weaknesses would be my height because I'm only 5-foot-8.

PBR: Who is the top team you have faced this year?

Helmbrecht: St. Peter's Prep down in South Carolina this spring.

PBR: Tell us a fun fact about yourself others might not know.

Helmbrecht: Everyone calls me "little guy".

Buzz on Helmbrecht
Helmbrecht only stands 5-foot-8 but don't let the size fool you, the kid plays with a lot of heart and is very gritty. Good instincts behind the plate with some raw tools. Needs time at NCCC to gain some muscle and continue to develop but should be in good hands with Coach Clingersmith. Helmbrecht's arm at first glance is average but his release and footwork help give consistent times to second. He hits for average making solid contact from the left side.
