Prep Baseball Report

Q and A with Wright State commit Anthony Mercer

PBR: Why did you choose Wright State?
Mercer:  My brother played baseball at Wright St., and not that I wanted to follow in his shoes, but mostly because we had previous knowledge of how great the coaches were. I also love the schedule they play.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?
Mercer:  I was not considering any other schools.

PBR: Where did Wright State first see you compete?
Mercer:  I went to a prospect camp at Wright St., and it kind of took off from there.

PBR: What role do the coaches expect you to play during your first year on campus?
Mercer:  The coaches and I talked about me catching about half the games as a freshman and maybe DH'ing or something else in the other half of the games. But I'm sure nothing is set in stone.

PBR: What is your biggest strength as a player and how do you feel that will help Wright State?
Mercer:  I think I am much more defensively advanced right now. I hope to continue to get better offensively and hope to be solid behind the plate for Wright St.

PBR: Who has had the biggest impact on you as a baseball player?
Mercer:  No doubt about it, my brother Jeff. He has pushed and pushed and pushed because he knew it was something I wanted to do. He had been there before, knew what it took, and he really laid the ground work for me and showed me what I needed to do. I'm very grateful for that.

PBR: What was your most exciting experience playing summer ball?
Mercer:  Winning a Pastime Tournament. Also going to Florida with my baseball teammates was a blast.

PBR: Who is the toughest pitcher/hitter you have faced in Indiana?
Mercer:  When I have pitched, the toughest hitter I faced was my summer teammate Alex Krupa. He is a nightmare. If he doesn't pop up, it's a hit. He can fly.

PBR: What are your goals both individually and for the team going into your senior season?
Mercer:  I am only a junior but this baseball year, my junior season, I have some personal goals like batting average. I would like to start hitting for pop, more doubles, gap to gap and homeruns would be great. My teammates all agree that we feel confident we can win county and win sectionals. When you get to the postseason, anything can happen, so we'll see. I'm excited.
