Q&A with Arkansas State commit Garrett Huff

By: Zac Bottoms
Scouting Director Arkansas

We recently had the opportunity to catch up  with Garret Huff and discussed his commitment to Arkansas State. Garrett is a 6-0 185 pound MIF from Genoa Central HS, in Genoa. He had a great junior season being a catalyst at the top of the line up. His offensive and defensive production helped lead Genoa Central to a class 3A State Championship.

PBR: Ultimately, why did you choose Arkansas State University?

Huff: I chose ASU because I really like Coach Raffo and Coach Everman. I fell in love with the campus on my visit, and I really liked the vision that they have going forward for the program. I am looking forward to getting on campus and being a Red Wolf.

PBR: Where did they first see you compete?

Huff: They first saw me compete at Xtra Innings. Then Coach Everman came to see me play in Joplin, Missouri.

PBR:  When did you take your first official visit to the Arkansas State University?

Huff: I took my unofficial visit the week after Xtra Inning, on the way home from our World Series in Joplin, Missouri. I am taking my official visit September 19-21st.

PBR: What role do the coaches expect you to play your first year on campus?

Huff: Coach Raffo likes me as an infielder, but since I have caught and played in the outfield before I am prepared to do whatever they need me to do.

PBR: What other schools were you considering?

Huff: West Virginia, UL – Lafayette, UL – Monroe, UALR, and Southeast Missouri State had all been in contact with me  throughout the summer, and up until I committed, as well as several junior colleges.

PBR: Who did you play for this summer? Talk about your experience playing for them.

Huff: I play for the East Texas Canes in the summer. It was a great experience because we played a lot of good competition, and saw good pitching to get me ready for this year.

PBR: Who has had the biggest impact on you as a baseball player?

Huff: My dad has had the biggest impact on my baseball career. He has coached me since I was 3, and I have played for him every year since. He is an assistant coach on the Canes, and at Genoa Central, so he has been with me every step of the way.

PBR: What were your stats for your High School last spring?

Huff:This past year I hit .480 with 46 hits, 12 doubles, two triples, and two home runs. I also had 19 rbi’s from the lead-off spot, and a school record 32 stolen bases.

PBR: Who is the toughest pitcher you've faced in Arkansas?

Huff: This past summer I got to go against Blaine Knight from Bryant, and Mark Moyer from Russellville. They were two of the best pitchers I saw all summer. Logan Clark from Smackover is also another good pitcher I have hit off of in the past
