Seniors Kyle Michalik and Gerry Salsbury and their Brunswick teammates played near flawless baseball in Hudson, defeating the host school No. 12 Hudson 3-0 in the district championship game. 

Brunswick righty Michalik (OSU recruit) faced only four over the minimum batters in limiting Hudson to two hits and a scoreless effort at the plate.  

Brunswick’s offense was led by Gerry Salsbury, who was three for three with a double and a triple.

Michalik walked the first batter in the first and second innings, but bore down to get the next two after a sacrifice in the first, and then struck out the next three batters after the walk in the second. 

Salsbury then jump started the Brunswick offense with a lead-off triple in the bottom of the second, scoring on senior Kyle Wheeler’s RBI single to left.  Sophomore Gary Clift followed with a single and then senior catcher Brian Lees executed a safety squeeze to score Wheeler from third.  Heads up defense caught the Brunswick runner rounding third too far on the play, resulting in a out and squelching a potential big inning for Brunswick. 

Michalik scored from second in the third inning on an RBI single by Salsbury to finish the scoring on the day. 

The OSU recruit did not need any more runs as he rolled through the solid Hudson line-up the rest of the game.  The athletic right-hander finished with five strikeouts and three walks on the day.

Hudson junior right-hander Nick Saran gave way to senior Jono Chafe to start the fourth inning.  Chafe battled the strong Brunswick line-up, holding them scoreless the rest of the way. 

Hudson finished the season with a 23-6 record and a district runner-up trophy.

District champ Brunswick (21-9) advances to Thurman Munson Stadium and the Canton regional to take on No. 14 Mentor.
