Reno Rides Starting Pitching

Buddy Gouldsmith
Nevada Scouting Director

The Reno Huskies traveled to Grass Valley, CA to take on Nevada Union in a double header on Sunday.  The Huskies will traditionally not play other Northern Nevada teams during the fall as it prepares for its spring campaign.  Reno, a perennial Northern Nevada contender looked sharp in its fall ball contests.  They used just 5 pitchers in two games, getting solid starting performances from Caedon Kottinger (2020), and John Kane (2019).  The Huskies hurlers combined to pitch 11.1 of the 14 innings played.  The offense showed signs of potency, but had a number of opportunities to further separate from Nevada Union in both games.

The Huskies swept the two game affair, 6-1 and 3-0.  Game one saw starting pitcher Caedon Kottinger pitch 4.2 innings, yielding just one run. Emmett Harvey (2019) threw the final 2.1 innings, pounding the bottom of the zone with a sinker and changeup, inducing a multitude of ground balls. The offense was paced by two-hole hitter, Gunner Gouldsmith (2020), a Washington State commit.  Gouldsmith was 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored. Coleman Schmidt (2020), John Barry (2019), and Grayson Grinsell (2022) each had a pair of hits.  John Kane hit a mammoth home run to right field.

Game two was dominated by pitching, John Kane shutout Nevada Union for 6.2 innings, giving up just two hits before giving way to Toray Felix (2020), then John Barry who recorded the final out of the game.  Offensively, the Huskies scored all three runs in the 4th inning with 2 outs. Grayson Grinsell singled with two aboard and two out to left field, scoring Skyler Hales (2020) and John Kane.  Grinsell then scored on CA State East Bay commit, Garret Damico’s (2019) single.

The takeaways for the Huskies today are solid starting pitching as well as the steadfast strike throwing of Emmett Harvey. Although a limited look, John Barry closed out game two commandingly. The offense of the newcomers, junior transfer, Gunner Gouldsmith and freshman, Grayson Grinsell, with four hits each on the day, provide a welcomed infusion.
