Sierra Vista at Desert Oasis

LAS VEGAS, NV – With tryouts around the corner and the regular season approaching, teams are finishing up their fall and winter workouts.  On Tuesday, the Sierra Vista Lions visited the Desert Oasis Diamondbacks.  The Lions and head coach, Thomas Maxwell struck first but the D’Backs answered.  It was a see saw battle early but eventually the D’back would take the lead for good and win 15-6. Thee was plenty of offense on both sides, some of which resulted from an inability to throw strikes on both sides as well as a few miscues.  Eventually, the Desert Oasis offense proved too much for the Lions. '20 infielder, Colby Smith and '21 Jacob Walsh had big doubles and centerfielder '19 Campbell Holt sent a pitch well beyond the right-centerfield fence.  These blows were too much for Sierra Vista to overcome and the D'Backs pulled away.

Sierra Vista shuffled their hurlers in one at a time for and inning of work while Desert Oasis used 4 pitchers, knowing they host Basic on Wednesday. Sierra Vista, Alex Chevaria, RHP, showed solid feel for his breaking ball in his one inning of work.  D’Backs closer, Tyler Montoya caught the eye of PBR Nevada, its first live glimpse of the 2019 left hander as he threw the final half inning.

2019, Tyler Montoya, LHP (Desert Oasis)

A Stocky, 5-foot-10, 195 sturdy bodied left-hander with present core strength, Montoya pitched with a fastball ranging 87-88.  He relies on plane over life, getting on top of the ball consistently, pitching down in the zone. He had a feel for his curveball, 72-73, showing a get me over strike and a more sweeping strikeout breaking ball.  He did not feature a changeup as he made quick work of Lion hitters in the top half of the seventh inning to secure the win.  Unconfirmed reports claim Montoya has not thrown an inning of varsity high school baseball and remains uncommitted.  The mid-year transfer could prove to be quite a find for the D’Backs this spring.
