Prep Baseball Report

South Caroliina - Initial 2020 Rankings

Eddie Tisdale
Scouting Director - South Carolina

Since the introduction of Prep Baseball Report in South Carolina it has been our mission to see as many players as we can in as many ways as possible. During the last 5 months our scouts have scoured the state, attending high school games, travel/showcase games, American Legion games, and hosting our own events in order to see as many players as we can.

The 2020 class is a deeply talented group of players with a very intriguing mixture of power arms, talented hitters, and skilled defenders. As the season gets closer and these guys embark on their Junior campaigns our "boots on the ground" scouting staff will continue to update our rankings to reflect the stock of those currently in the top 75 as well as expand the rankings to include additional players from across the state. The state rankings are used to assist our scouting staff in compiling our National rankings which were released in August and contains 500 players from across the country.

2020 Top PROSPECT Spotlights

Alex Edmondson (RHP, Maudlin, Clemson) takes the top spot in the initial 2020 rankings. The 6 foot 3, 200 pounder has a power arm recording fastballs as high as 92 during the summer season. The loose whippy arm action produces riding life through the zone and there is a durable frame present that only projects to get better.

Caden Grice (LHP/OF, Riverside, Clemson) has been trending in the right direction this summer which included a trip to the Area Code Underclass Games. Recently he put forth another great effort at the WWBA Underclass event in Ft. Myers for the Canes National team. The FB was up to 88 early complimented by a changeup with fade and a sharp breaking ball. The 6 foot 5, 210 pound lefty has arguably one of the highest ceilings in the 2020 class.

Alex Urban (OF, River Bluff, Clemson) may be the best athlete in the class. The 5 foot 11, 175 pound frame is strong with sneaky pull side power. Urban is confident with the barrel and produces some impressive rounds of batting practice with a naturally lofted bat path. He was impressive at the Area Code Underclass Games showing excellent feel for the barrel gap to gap and continued that trend throughout the summer which included an appearance in the SA Border Battle.

Tomas Frick (C, JL Mann, North Carolina) is a solid all around player who highlighted his summer campaign with a solid showing at the Area Code Underclass Games and an appearance in the SA Border Battle. There is present gap to gap power and the skills behind the plate are tops in the class. Advanced receiving skills and catch/throw ability will give him a chance to make an impact at the next level.

Jalen Vazquez (SS/2B, Fort Dorchester, South Carolina) the Palmetto Games and SA Border Battle participant has watched his stock soar during the summer and fall seasons. The uber athletic middle infielder can really pick it. Hitting from the left side he has shown advanced feel for the barrel and an uptick in bat speed, putting together a solid campaign for the Canes National 16u team.

Sam Swygert (RHP, South Aiken, South Carolina) has come on as strong as anyone during the 2018 summer circuit seeing his velocity jump all the way into the upper 80's and even touching 90. The athletic right handed pitcher really burst onto the scene in Atlanta during the 16u world series throwing 4 shutout innings with 5 K's for the Dirtbags organization. He followed that effort up with solid showings at the Palmetto Games and the SA Border Battle.

Mikey Tepper (RHP, Fort Mill, Charlotte) has been up to 91 mph for the On Deck O's organization this summer. Projectable 6 foot 1, 180 pound frame with a loose whip to his arm action. Has shown the ability to feel two offspeed pitches, a change as well as a tight curveball with late action.

* Vince Smith (SS, West Ashley/Cavalry Christian FL, Louisiana State) has relocated to Clearwater, FL and is attending Calvary Christian High School. The skillful infielder can still be found in our National rankings and will soon be added to our Florida state rankings.
