South Texas Underclass Games: Quick Hits

COLLEGE STATION, T.X. - On July 14, our PBR Texas Staff hosted our South Texas Underclass Games to a much anticipated showcase and trials at Texas A&M University. This event was absolutely loaded with top prospects in the 2022-2024 classes from around the state,  with a plethora of uncommitted prospects college recruiters will want to follow closely this summer. 

QUICK HITS 

Jax Traeger RHP / 3B / Concordia Lutheran, TX / 2022

The TCU commit came in and threw plenty of strikes. His fastball was 87-89 T90 mph while his curveball was 73-78 mph and changeup was 80 mph. He flashed good movement on his pitches and filled up the zone.


Justin Lamkin LHP / OF / Calallen, TX / 2022

Texas A&M commit. Lamkin showed a strong fastball that was 86-88 mph flashing arm-side run and ability to throw it for strikes up and to the arm-side. He also had a curveball that was 70-71 mph with sharp, 10/4 action.


Tristan Russell SS / C / Cypress Woods, TX / 2023

Florida State commit.Solid switch-hitting athlete with clean actions across the board defensively and at the plate. He ran a 7.13 60 and threw 83 mph across the infield. During BP, Russell had a max exit velocity of 92.5 mph from the left side and 89.0 mph from the right side. 


Brayden Sharp OF / LHP / The Woodlands, TX / 2023

Baylor commit. Sharp showed solid athleticism during the event. He ran a 6.95 60 to kick off the day and then had the highest velo from the outfield with 90 mph and then had a max exit velocity of 93.6 mph during BP. On the mound in the game, he was pounding the zone with his fastball, sitting 81-83 mph. His curveball was sharp, with 12/6 action at 70 mph and had a changeup that was 76 mph with arm-side run.


Thomas Marquardt RHP / RHP / Harlan , TX / 2022

Marquardt showed good velocity on the bump with his fastball sitting 85-88 T89 mph flashing good ability to throw it for strikes. He showed an 81-84 mph slider flashing late, sharp action and good ability to also throw it for strikes. Also featured a curveball at 69-73 mph with big, 11/5 shape.


Holden Rook OF / OF / College Park, TX / 2022

Rook showcased solid athleticism throughout the event starting off with a 6.59 60, the fastest of the day. From the outfield, he was 83 mph with clean, athletic actions and during BP he had a max exit velocity of 93.5 mph. Plenty of room for growth from him as he continues to physically develop.


Tynan Gunn 1B / RHP / Vista Ridge, TX / 2022

Gunn put on a show during BP with a max exit velocity of 102.6 mph, consistently launching balls deep to the pull side. At 1B, he showed off good feet with soft hands. 


Rashawn Galloway C / 3B / Boerne , TX / 2022

Galloway put on a show during BP putting a couple of balls out of the park to left field with a max exit velocity of 101.6 mph. Behind the plate, he had a pop time of 1.94 with a short, quick arm and soft hands receiving the ball. Also showed solid blocking ability during the game.


Chris Benavidez OF / OF / Rudder, TX / 2022

Benavidez showed good athleticism during the entire event, starting off with a 6.77 60, then threw 86 from the outfield with clean actions and had a max exit velocity of 96.5 during BP. During the game, he also had a double to deep LCF. 


Luke Steward RHP / 1B / College Station, TX / 2022

Long, lanky RHP with a high spin fastball that was 83-86 mph, flashing late cutting action. He also featured a curveball that was 71-73 mph flashing late, downer action.


Jake Tatom SS / 3B / Porter , TX / 2022

Tatom showed good athleticism throughout the day running a 6.95 60, threw 87 across the infield with clean actions and had a max exit velocity of 92.4 mph during BP. 


Zack Zavala 2B / SS / Georgetown , TX / 2022

Zavala showed good athleticism throughout the day and in the game. He ran a 7.06 60 and threw 78 across the infield during the workout. In BP he had a max exit velocity of 92.7 mph with good bat speed, hitting balls well to the pull side. 


Rocco Garza-Gongora OF / 1B / JB Alexander, TX / 2022

Long, lanky athlete ran a 7.13 60 to kick off the workout and then threw 89 mph from the outfield with clean actions. He had a max exit velocity of 91.1 mph during BP, hitting balls consistently well to the pull side. He also had a hit during the game portion of the event.
