Southeast Senior Games: Team Alabama Preview

Austin Sharp
Alabama Scouting Director

EMERSON, GA - The Southeast Senior Games on Monday, July 25th will kick-off a seven day period at LakePoint Sports in Emerson, GA where hundreds of the country’s top uncommitted prospects will put their talents on display. This event will feature some of the top uncommitted players from the 2023 class that have been invited by their state scouting director.

The event will begin with a pro-style workout for all the position players that includes the 60 yard dash, BP with TrackMan ball flight analysis and Blast Motion swing analysis, and a defensive evaluation. Following the showcase, players will split into their teams and play a double header.

Prospects will represent their state on Teams Alabama, Carolinas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mid-Atlantic, Mississippi/Louisiana, and Tennessee.

Alabama Positional Players

Will Lawrence C / 1B / Hoover, AL / 2023

Lawrence should be one of the more physically imposing prospects in attendance at this event. Standing 6-foot-4, 210-pounds, Lawrence has posted multiple triple-digit exit velocities at the two invite-only events he's attended this summer while showing easy power from the right side. As a bit of a late bloomer, Lawrence will be a good one to follow come Monday.

Ben Goodwin C / 2B / Westminster Christian, AL / 2023

After attending the AL/MS Border Battle last fall, Goodwin has continued to swing the bat well throughout the spring and summer seasons. He's seen a bit of an uptick in the power outputs and is a decent defender behind the plate. Goodwin will look to continue off of prior performances with a good showing on Monday.

Colten Payton C / 3B / James Clemens, AL / 2023

A move-in from the state of Colorado roughly a year ago, Payton has made an immediate impact for both James Clemens HS and Vipers Baseball Academy with intriguing power from the right side and a physical 6-foot-3, 200-pound frame. He posted a top exit velocity of 95.0 mph and a 1.98 pop time at this summer's Top Prospect Games.

Cooper Phillips C / 3B / West Limestone , AL / 2023

It had been a while since we had seen Phillips in a showcase setting, but it was easy to see the progress he's made from the summer of 2020 to the summer of 2022. At our Knights South Weekend in early June, Phillips posted one of the more impressive rounds of BP showing feel for the barrel and working to all parts of the field. It's a mature approach from the right side with a solid 5-foot-11, 205-pound frame.

Hayes Harrison LHP / 1B / Oxford, AL / 2023

Harrison has always been on our radar after making a quick impression as a young freshman a couple years ago at our Top Gun Scout Day. Now standing a stronger 6-foot-0, 180-pounds, the two-way prospect is a definite follow for someone looking to firm up their class. He's been a staple in the Yellow Jackets' lineup over the past few years with some gap-to-gap pop, and will also throw an inning on the mound for Team Alabama.

Eli Tidwell 3B / RHP / Hartselle , AL / 2023

One of our favorite players in this class that is still uncommitted, Tidwell looks to be very comfortable hitting at LakePoint with two home runs playing in the 17U National Championships with Excel Blue Wave. Tidwell is a gamer-type prospect who can beat you in a variety of ways, showing that power and also the ability to affect the game with his athleticism being a 6.83-runner. Served as the leadoff hitter for Hartselle HS, the 6A State Champs this past spring.

Bo Solley SS / RHP / Decatur Heritage, AL / 2023

Solley was another 2023 who helped lead his high school team to their respective classification's state finals series this spring. The middle infielder continued to impress into the summer with a good showing at our Top Prospect Games, where he ran a 7.09 60 YD, posted an 81 mph INF velocity and a 93.8 mph exit velocity. During gameplay, Solley also recorded a pair of extra base hits. Another good one to keep an eye on at this event.

Walker Allen SS / 2B / Mountain Brook, AL / 2023

Another infielder who enjoyed a stellar showing at this summer's Top Prospect Games, Allen has the look of a next-level shortstop with an athletic 6-foot-1, 185-pound frame. The starting shortstop over the past couple years for the Spartans, Allen is calm, cool and collected from the right side of the plate with good feel for the barrel and a line drive approach. A reliable defender up the middle, Allen should stick there in the future.

Mykell Murrah SS / RHP / Elkmont, AL / 2023

A prospect who has flown a bit under the radar over the past couple of years, Murrah is one of our favorites in the class with the ability to perform as a two-way prospect at a high level. Being one of the top players in Class 4A this spring in AL, Murrah is an elite athlete standing 5-foot-10, 180-pounds with present strength throughout. He's been a 6.79-runner in previous viewings and posted consistent exit velocities in the low-90's, as well. Will also run his fastball up into the upper-80's on the mound.

Brady Waugh 3B / 2B / Briarwood , AL / 2023

Regarded as another top uncommitted prospect in the 2023 class in AL, Waugh has done nothing but hit, hit, and hit again in each look over the past couple years. Being the leading hitter for always-talented Briarwood Christian this past spring, Waugh has an accurate barrel hitting from the left side and a versatile skill set defensively that allows him to play multiple positions. He's gotten some good looks this year and shouldn't be uncommitted for too much longer.

Connor Cosby OF / OF / Auburn , AL / 2023

Cosby has been one of the leading hitters for Auburn HS, one of the top programs in the state, ever since he was inserted into the lineup in the playoffs of his sophomore year. Hitting in the leadoff spot in one of the more talented lineups this spring, Cosby posted a .398 batting average with 41 H, 10 2B, 3 HR & 17 RBI as a junior. He's continued to be one of the more consistent hitters while finding the barrel at a high rate over his career.

Gabe Young OF / LHP / Mountain Brook, AL / 2023

After always being known for his power hitting from the left side, Young has cemented himself as a quality two-way prospect this summer with a standout showing at this summer's Top Prospect Games. Still being one of the top outfielders in the class, Young has intriguing power potential from the left side with 6.91-speed and a strong arm from the OF. He also worked up to 89 mph on the mound at this summer's event with solid feel for his secondaries. Big time run-producer for the Spartans over the past couple of years.

Caleb Freeman OF / LHP / Etowah, AL / 2023

Freeman is another prospect who helped lead his high school team to the state finals this past spring, as he was relied on heavily for production for the Etowah Blue Devils. Standing roughly 5-foot-9, 175-pounds, Freeman is a flat gamer who plays the game hard-nosed and the right way. In a couple of looks this spring, Freeman showed some sneaky power from the right side, while also being able to hit for average, as well. Athleticism translate well defensively where he can track down balls well in the outfield.

Mason Steele OF / RHP / Headland, AL / 2023

Another rising senior who may be flying under the radar a bit, Steele possesses plenty of intriguing tools with a left-handed bat that has shown the ability to leave the yard and an athletic 6-foot-2, 175-pound frame. Steele made good impressions in multiple looks this year, including being one of the top performers at this summer's All-State Open event. At that event, the rising senior was clocked at 6.81 in the 60 YD and posted a 97.4 mph exit velocity during BP with pull-side power. Also has been a solid performer for Headland HS and Post 70 Baseball. A good one to keep close tabs on.

CJ Bush OF / RHP / Bob Jones , AL / 2023

Last but certainly not list on the positional player list, Bush is bound to put up one of the best workouts of the event this Monday. Like Steele, the 6-foot-1, 185-pounder has plenty of intriguing tools across the board including elite athleticism and big power potential from the right side. He's been clocked a 6.69 this summer in the 60 YD, and posted a 96.7 mph exit velocity at this summer's Knights South Weekend. Also flashed some power with multiple home runs for Bob Jones HS this spring. Should continue to see his stock rise with another good showing Monday.

Alabama Pitcher-Only's

Garrison Kahn RHP / 3B / Oak Mountain, AL / 2023

Kahn made a big splash on the recruiting scene last year showing an upper-80's fastball with a slim, projectable 6-foot-3, 185-pound frame. After a solid junior season on the mound for Oak Mountain HS, Kahn has bumped 90 mph & 91 mph at different PBR events and tournaments with Top Gun Baseball, including the Top Prospect Games this summer. There's potential for more velocity as he continues to add strength to his frame in the future. He's shown some feel for a slider in the mid-70's with room of continued to development.

Jack Thomas Kelly RHP / 1B / Mountain Brook , AL / 2023

Kelly has been named a top performer at multiple PBR events this summer, including our All-State Games just a couple weeks ago where he earned his invite. A 6-foot-2, 200-pound right-hander with strength throughout, the rising senior has a fastball that works in the mid-to-upper-80's and has touched 89 mph this summer. He has a quality breaking ball in the low-70's that flashes two-plane break, and showed some pitchability at the event a couple weeks ago.

Chase Ambrose RHP / SS / Buckhorn, AL / 2023

Ambrose is a former PBR Future Gamer from last summer and has worked back to full strength after missing some of the spring on the mound. In a previous viewing at LakePoint Sports this week, Ambrose worked efficiently on the mound for Excel Blue Wave with an 85-88 mph fastball and a power slider at 79-81 mph. He also flashed a fading changeup at 76-77 mph that worked well off the fastball and is a solid third offering. Using an up-tempo delivery standing 6-foot-0, 190-pounds, Ambrose has a really fast arm with intriguing stuff.

Logan Mooney LHP / OF / Athens, AL / 2023

Mooney was one of the top arms on a talented Athens HS pitching staff this past spring showing pitchability and a bit of an uptick in velocity with his fastball. At 6-foot-1, 165-pounds, the senior southpaw works comfortably in the low-80's, touching 85 mph, and has shown the ability to consistently land a 1-7 breaking ball for strikes while flashing a 75-76 mph changeup. He's comfortable with all three and can throw all for strikes. Already has picked up some offers and shouldn't stay uncommitted for too long.

Cole Lowe LHP / OF / Mortimer Jordan , AL / 2023

Lowe made a quick & lasting impression at our All-State Games just a couple weeks ago showing he was back to full strength after missing out on his junior spring. Using a funky, deceptive H 3/4 arm slot, Lowe produced a fastball that worked 84-87 mph (2200 rpm) with arm-side run, and spun a 72-73 mph breaking ball that showed sharp horizontal break. Also flashed a 75-76 mph changeup with fade. Excellent feel for all three of his pitches and will be one to know come Monday.

Charlie Berryman RHP / OF / Mountain Brook , AL / 2023

We've seen Berryman multiple times over the past year and he continues to show improvement each time out. With a high-waisted 6-foot-1, 175-pound frame, Berryman has a really fast arm coming out of a H 3/4 arm slot that generates a heavy fastball that was up to 90 mph just a few days ago with Excel Blue Wave. He showed excellent command to go get it to the glove side at our All-State Games, while also using a tight slider at 74-77 mph for swing-and-miss.

Jackson Crow RHP / OF / Oxford, AL / 2023

Crow has a strong 6-foot-0, 200-pound frame with a thick lower-half that helps him generates a mid-80's fastball with carry through the zone that can be a little sporadic at times, but gets swings-and-misses when commanded in the zone. He also uses a sharp, late-breaking curveball that showed 11-5 depth and bite in the low-70's with an average of 2500 rpm. He has a quick, compact H 3/4 slot with good speed and whip to the arm.
