Team Of The Week: Veteran Leadership Has Lancaster Unbeaten

LANCASTER - Corey Conn has discovered what a veteran team can do for a program.

A squad featuring 11 seniors and seven juniors on the roster has Lancaster off to a 10-0 start and in doing so has been selected one of this week’s Prep Baseball Report Ohio Teams of the Week.

“We’ve had some good senior leadership classes the last few years and this year is no different,” noted Conn, the seventh-year Lancaster head coach. “But this is the first time since I’ve been here we’ve been all upper class. They know the expectations, a lot of these guys are in their third year, if not fourth year, as starters.”

With a ton of returning experience from a 20-10 season a year ago, the Golden Gales had high hopes entering the 2019 campaign.

“We had a lot of guys back coming off last year when it was the first time in school history we won the league and the first time in 25 years we won a district title,” Conn said. “They got a taste of success and now they’re pushing to leave their own legacy this year.”

Two wins over Grove City along with victories over Pickerington Central, Hilliard Davidson, Circleville, Teays Valley and Canal Winchester are among the highlights so far for PBR’s 10th-rated Division I team in the state.

“You always want to start this well but to start 10-0, while it’s not shocking, but I believe it’s the best we’ve ever started in school history,” Conn explained. “I think the previous best was 7-0 in 2006. To be 10-0 and undefeated in league play is a nice start.”

Senior shortstop Tyler Monk is hitting nearly .500 so far and the third-year starter is one of the reasons for the early success along with senior pitcher Garrett Davis who is 5-0 to date. Senior outfielder Jake Richards, junior third baseman Wes Ward, junior second baseman/pitcher Evan Sines and junior first baseman/pitcher Casey Finck (Video) are among the other key contributors thus far.

“They are all having really good at-bats and have really been clutch at times,” Conn said.

But the schedule does not get any easier with a rematch against Pickerington Central (rated 37th) today, Hilliard Bradley on Saturday, Pickerington North (rated 33rd) twice next week and 22nd-ranked Springboro the following Saturday.

“We talk about one day, one pitch at a time and control what we can control,” Conn noted. “We do a lot of mental game stuff. Things are not going to always go your way. How do you react? What you can’t control, don’t worry about.”

It has the Golden Gales riding high through 10 games.

“We have some lofty goals, we just have to take it a day at a time and keep our focus,” Conn concluded.
