Team of the Week: Charlevoix HS

This week’s team of the week for Prep Baseball Report Michigan is Charlevoix High School. They are led by 10th year head coach Allen Telgenhof.

The Rayders play in the Lake Michigan Conference in Northern Michigan. Charlevoix is currently 24-8, with a 10-4 record in conference, which put them in 2nd place. Charlevoix is also ranked 10th overall in the Division 3 state rankings. When speaking to Coach Telgenhof recently, the team is very young with most of the contributions coming from juniors and sophomores.

This includes:

CF Noah Certa- .408 39-R 16-2B 21-SB (Noah is also the school all-time run leader)

C, 2015 Will Telgenhof- .456 37-RBI 1-HR 25-SB

SS/RHP, 2015 Nate Moon- 9-2 61-IP 81K 1.07 ERA .368 32 RBI

IF Austin Putman- .432 3-HR 34-RBI 25-SB

Coach Telgenhof on Moon- “We feel that whenever he is on the mound we have a chance to win and compete in every game we play”.

This could not have been more evident than in a recent game against Hillman HS. Hillman coming into the game was ranked 4th overall in the Division 4 rankings, and Charlevoix won in a well-pitched 2-1 victory.  Moon pitched all seven innings and led the team to victory.

Coach Telgenhof was also quick to point out that his seniors Luke Klinger and Shane Southerland are helping to keep the team stay focused on the ultimate goal of winning the conference and performing well in the tournament. Last year’s team had an all-state nominee in Tommy Zipp, who is currently playing at Glen Oaks Community College.

The team also receives instruction from former Padre minor leaguer Mike Epping, who works with the hitters and base runners.
