Team of The Week: Haslett High School

This week’s team of the week of Prep Baseball Report Michigan is the Haslett Vikings, who come out of the Capital Area Athletic Conference’s Red Division.

The Viking’s are one of the top programs in the state and are currently ranked 11th in the power polls on Prep Baseball Report in the state.

The team is currently 13-4 including 4-0 in conference play and is looking to make a run at a state title after making it all the way to the quarterfinals last season.

Head coach Jeff Woodworth returned every player from that team last season and he feels the depth of the team is really good this year.

“In terms of overall strengths, I’d say pitching is number one, defense is number two,” Woodworth said. “As of recently, we’ve actually been swinging the bats pretty good.”

The pitching staff goes six deep, which is something the team will look to lean on as they head deeper in the season.”

“We’re pretty good at pitching, pretty deep with the pitching staff,” Woodworth said. “I have two Monday guys, two Thursday guys and two weekend guys.”

With the success they had last season and with all of the returning players, Woodworth is looking to keep the focus level high for his team and is also looking to keep competition at a high level as well.

“Competition is pretty good, we’re actually pretty deep at a number of spots so when competition gets going and kids aren't doing what they are suppose to do, we can slide the younger kids in and usually not loser very much ability,” Woodworth said.”

When it comes to players who can play at the next level, the team only has one kid committed to play in college but Woodworth feels there are a few more guys who will definitely get a look.

“Realistically we have five or six guys that could play at the next level,” Woodworth said. “Right now, the only player we have committed is senior Peter Romsek who is going to Adrian.”

Woodworth mentioned Bryce Dickman, Zach Berry, Trace Woodworth, and Hunter Ruhstorfer as kids who could have a chance of moving on.

As for the rest of this season, the team has their sights set high and are looking to make a run in the state tournament.

“They have goals to win a state championship and they’re working hard to obtain those goals,” Woodworth said. “It’s our number one thing here. With the group going to the quarterfinals as a young group, they've had a bit of a taste of what it’s like to make a run so hopefully we can play well and make a little noise in Division two.”
