Team of The Week: Potterville High School

This week’s team of the week for Prep Baseball Report Michigan is Potterville High School, who is coached by first year head coach Lance Beasley.

The Vikings are members of the Central Michigan Athletic Conference and while they feature a relatively young team, Beasley and his squad have been making some noise, knocking off many of the conference’s top opponents.

“We have a relatively young team, we really work well together as a team,” Beasley said. “Nobody on the team has been really selfish so far this season, they all have each other’s back and they all grew up playing with each other.”

The Vikings have played their best against the top competition this season with a big-time sweep over three-time defending league champ Bath early in the season.

They also had sweeps against powerhouse Pewamo-Westphalia and Portland St. Patrick.

“All of those games, we’re usually on the opposite side of those where we are the ones getting swept,” Beasley said. “We are really battling to the very last out this season and it has made a difference.”

Pitching is the name of the game for the Vikings and Beasley feels that the pitching rotation he has along with the team’s defense are their biggest strengths.

“I think are strengths are definitely on the mound and behind the plate,” Beasley said. “We've got a pretty good pitching staff. The things we have to work on are making sure we are focused on every pitch of the game and playing hard.”

The program doesn't currently have any kids committed to play at the next level, but Beasley mentioned players like Sam Traver and Colin Groom as players who have are getting looks from some small schools.

The future looks bright for the Vikings as well, as the team is relatively young and has players like sophomore Marcus Traver, who is currently leading the team in runs batted in.
