With snow and 30-degree temps still hanging around, the official Opening Day for Illinois High School baseball almost was a complete-game shutout. Breaking up the shutout performance by Mother Nature, were our Southern Illinois River-River Conference schools Du Quoin and Benton, who battled in Du Quoin on Monday afternoon.

Du Quoin 11, Benton 0 (5 innings)

In a Southern Illinois River-River cross-over affair, DuQuoin (SIRR-Mississippi) (1-0) rolled past Benton (SIRR-Ohio) 11-0 in five innings. The Indians scored single runs in the first and second innings, added two in the third and then put the game away with a seven-run explosion in the fourth. Indian sophomore RHP A.J. Smith (1-0) retired the Rangers in the top of the fifth for a complete-game one-hit shutout. Smith fanned seven Ranger batsmen.

Indian senior Brenden Fred led the 12-hit Du Quoin attack with three hits, including a double. Fred also plated a pair for the Indians. Senior 3B Austin Mansker, junior OF Camden Youngman and senior 1B Garrett Dorsey all had a pair of hits and RBI’s for the Indians. Senior Jonah Spencer chipped with a pair of ribbies.

Benton (0-1) sophomore 2B Caleb Kearney had the only hit for the Rangers.

Benton will play its home-opener against another SIRR-Mississippi foe when the Rangers take on Carterville at Benton City Park today at 4:30.

Du Quoin will be at SIRR-Ohio foe Herrin in a twin-bill at 11 on Saturday.
