Sean McGrath
Scouting Director, New Jersey

Name: Connor Coyle
High School: Sparta High School
Position(s): OF/RHP
Projected Position: Potential Two-way Player

Background

Connor Coyle has a wiry strong, athletic frame and is 6-foot, 170 pounds. The OF/RHP was a standout amongst the crowed at the Top Prospect Games and was one of many talented two-way players. He plays his summer ball for Wladyka, who provides high level exposure for players from Northern New Jersey.

Scouting Report

Coyle was excellent at our Top Prospect Game event, running a 6.69 in the 60-yard dash and showing impressive bat control. He has a short path to the ball but will occasionally cut off extension. He proved to have solid in-game at-bats against quality pitching. Defensively, Coyle has a strong arm from the outfield and displayed the ability to track down fly balls.

On the mound, Coyle uses a compact delivery while utilizing a fluid hand bump for rhythm into hand break. He has a long, loose arm action with whip to it and pitches from a ¾ arm slot. His fastball velocity was 82-86 miles-per-hour with some deception created as the ball seems to be hidden well until late. He does a good job of getting over his front knee at release point and he repeats his mechanics well. He coupled a deceptive fastball with a smaller, tight slider at 72-74 MPH and a changeup with late fade at 78-79 MPH. In my opinion, Coyle is a definite division one caliber arm due to his present stuff and potential to develop with the obvious athleticism. I would also give him a chance to hit but my concentration with him would be on the mound.
