Underclass Showcase: Preview

By Drew Locascio
Illinois Scouting Director

The Prep Baseball Report Underclass Showcase will take place on Sunday, October 21st. The event, which is open to all 2021s and 2022s in Illinois, is being held at The Max in McCook, Illinois.

The event currently has over 75 uncommitted underclassmen registered. CLICK HERE for the current roster.

There is still time to register by CLICKING HERE.

The event serves to identify some of the top underclass talent around the state. At last year’s event there were a number of 2020s who stood out and have made the most of their performance. OF/INF Tre Hondras (Homewood-Flossmoor, 2020) and INF Jacob Mote (Normal U-High) were ultimately selected to represent Team Illinois at the 2018 PBR Future Games. Hondras, has since committed to Michigan while Mote has big power potential at the plate and is currently ranked No. 20 in Illinois.

Some other high-interest underclassmen at last year’s event were 2020s RHP Cooper Herold (Minooka), OF Tom Jurack (Hinsdale Central), INF Brandon Micetich (Plainfield Central), RHP/INF Ben Vitas (Providence Catholic) and 2021s INF Dylan Scafuri (Romeoville), RHP Kyle Walter (Minooka), among others.

Looking at this year’s roster there are quite a few names that stand out. 2021 1B/OF Bobby Atkinson was called up to varsity last spring for St. Rita and features easy power in his left-handed bat. OF Zamaurion Hatcher (Kenwood, 2021) is another left-handed hitter who saw time on varsity as a freshman. Hatcher has a highly-repeatable swing with good bat-to-ball skills.

Zamaurion Hatcher (2.18.18)

George Korompilas (Glenbrook South) is yet another high-interest 2021 left-handed bat to keep an eye on come Sunday. Korompilas stays short and quick to the ball and possesses advanced bat strength for his age.

RHP Jeremy Fox (Riverside-Brookfield, 2021), RHP Ben Hess (Charleston, 2021) and LHP Eric Orloff (Glenbrook North) are some notable names who will toe the rubber on Sunday.

Ben Hess (7.23.18)

There should be plenty of other 2021s and 2022s poised to show well come Sunday.
