Unsigned Senior Spotlight: Beechwood Catcher Jake Schmidt

Kentucky Scouting Directorschmidt

Jake Schmidt, C, R/R, Beechwood HS

At 5-foot-10, 180-pounds, Schmidt shows good athleticism behind the plate.  He moves well laterally and is a solid receiver of the baseball with good blocking skills.  He has shown good arm strength at multiple events with his top velocity registering at 78 mph from the crouch and pop times that have ranged from 1.98-2.09  Schmidt has proven to be a very accurate thrower of the baseball to second base.

Offensively, Schmidt hits from a balanced and spread stance with minimal stride.  He maintains good balance throughout his swing with a line drive approach while flashing occasional gap power.  In two PBR events that included game play, Schmidt has certainly impressed in going 5-for-10 with a double that has included hits to all fields.  In addition, he shows good speed from the catcher position with a 4.53 home to first base time.

Schmidt will be a solid addition to a college roster and has the potential to make an impact early in his career at the next level.
