Unsigned Senior Spotlight: Catcher Nick Pope

By Chris Fuller
Kentucky Scouting Director

Nick Pope, C, Covington Catholic HSpope

Nick Pope is an athletic, 5-foot-11, 180-pound catcher who showed well at the Top Prospect Games in June at Eastern Kentucky University.

Pope shows good receiving and blocking skills and uses his athleticism well in moving laterally behind the plate.  His glove to hand transfer is quick with quick feet and 75 mph arm strength from the crouch.  Pope’s pop times ranged from 1.90-2.02.

Pope, who is athletic enough to play some shortstop for his summer team, showed good footwork in the infield, playing through the ball well with an accurate arm at 77 mph across the infield.

Offensively, Pope hits from a balanced setup with a short stride and good use of his lower half.  He registered an 82 mph tee exit velocity and ran a 7.01 60-yard dash.

Pope projects as a good defensive catcher at the next level, and his athleticism is a plus behind the plate.
