Unsigned Senior Spotlight: Dillon Groves

By: Zac Bottoms
Arkansas Scouting Director

Dillon Groves is a 6-foot, 200-pound catcher from Brookland High School. He is a large frame and a solid build. Defensively he is the top unsigned catcher with a 1.97 pop time. He uses a strong arm with carry to get this result. He would see an improvement if he would gain ground toward second base instead of standing up during his throwing motion. Offensively he puts together good at bats finding barrel on a consistent bases.
He has been a staple at the top of the lineup for the bearcats the past three seasons, hitting lead off each season. Being the catcher and leadoff hitter, is a lot of pressure and has earned Groves the trust of his head coach Preston Despain. This is what coach Despain had to say “Dillon has been an anchor for us at catcher.  His arm and body strength in general are as good as you will see at the high school level.  He has no trouble blocking the ball and does an excellent job calling pitches.   He has hit lead-off for us since his freshman year because he has good speed but is an even better base runner with great instincts for taking the extra base.  At the plate, I feel like he is ready to compete at the next level.  He proved his junior year that he can make adjustments to different types of good pitching and be a consistent force at the top of our order.”   This respect has been earned each and every day with solid production. As a junior he hit .547 with 13 RBI’s, 11 2B, and 1 HR.
Groves is a good student with a 4.06 GPA and a 25 ACT. While he isn’t playing baseball he plays basketball and was a part of the 2014 4A State Championship team. Overall Groves is an above athlete (6.75 in the 60) with good arm strength and a feel for the game. Offensively he is raw but with the frame an athleticism he has the ability to compete at the next level.
