WEDNESDAY NIGHT LIGHTS BURN BRIGHT IN CARSON

Buddy Gouldsmith
Nevada Scouting Director

CARSON CITY, NV – The lights at Ron McNutt Field at Carson High School were burning bright last night as the Senators of Carson took on the Spanish Springs Panthers.  The end of the fall season is quickly approaching in Northern Nevada and by looks of the crowd, they will miss their baseball.  The fans on hand were routing on their respective teams while watching the Major League Playoffs on their handheld devices.  The Northern Nevada passion for the game runs deep.

On the field, the Senators continue to push a young group toward maturity prior to the spring, while the Panthers appear to be a bit more balanced in their roster.  The visiting Panthers lineup was anchored by UNLV commit, Connor Culp (2019).  Culp will likely hold down the shortstop duties as well as toe the rubber for Spanish Springs.  Culp displayed a FB 84-86 with occasional late life and a slurvy breaking ball 73-74.  He had solid zone feel and made easy work of the hitters he faced.  He was aggressive at the plate with whip in his barrel.  He could be aided in the middle of the lineup by Andrew Mayse (2019).  Mayse has a durable body with present strength and made consistent hard contact.  He took the mound and pounded the strike zone as well.  In addition to Culp and Mayse, the Panthers possessed a number of strike throwers in Colby Durski (2020), Jace Avina (2021), and Trevor French (2019).

The Senator’s coach, Bryan Manoukian will rely heavily on the experience of upperclassman, Delsin Roberts (2019) as well as Kahle Good (2019).  Both are aggressive offensively and can carry the load at the top of the order.  Good is a versatile player that can play a number of positions serviceably, but is a defensive difference maker at 1B.  He routinely saves infielders errors by picking balls in the dirt and has good range.  Roberts, should provide stability in the middle infield at shortstop. On the mound, the Senators may have they most left-handed pitching in the area with five left-handers: Quinn Overland (2019), Vernon Painter (2019), Justin Nussbaum (2021), Max Fontaine (2020), and Damien Branco (2020).  Each of these pitchers lean on their finesse to compete their way through opposing lineups.
