Welcome to week 3 of the Power 25. There has been a series of shakeups in the rankings as some top teams had rough weeks and other top teams earned big statement wins. The northern portion of the Commonwealth was on vacation during the week with teams traveling all throughout the mid-Atlantic region. The Southern schools will go on break this coming week as the Northern schools return to their normal schedule.

As usual, many Virginia teams went to Myrtle Beach to take part in the first week of the Mingo Bay Classic, and both West Springfield and South Lakes won their brackets over fellow Virginia schools Westfield and Forest Park, respectively. Liberty Christian went to Cary, North Carolina to participate in the prestigious National High School Invitational, hosted by USA Baseball. James Madison went to Gulf Coast of Florida to take part in the Sarasota Classic Spring Break Tournament.

Now onto the rankings, as we have had a major shake-up in our Top 5. No. 4 Liberty Christian falls out of the top spot for the first time since early in 2015 as the Bulldogs went 1-3 at NHSI, which is a very competitive tournament featuring some of the top teams in the country. No. 3 James Madison had a better trip to Sarasota, but went 3-2 on their vacation.

Our new No. 1 team is the defending VISAA Division II State Champions, Greenbrier Christian. The Gators have started the season undefeated, and survived a rematch of the 2015 State Championship game on Saturday against No. 11 Miller School, winning 2-1 in extra innings.

Up to No. 2 is Hanover, which is also off to an undefeated start and had the biggest statement win of the week, pounding then-No. 10, very talented, St. Anne’s Belfield, 22-0. Moving into the Top 5 is Paul VI which is off to an 8-0 start with impressive wins over WCAC and public school competition.

Staying at No. 6 is Millbrook, as the Pioneers are off to a 4-0 start and have yet to allow a run this spring. Moving up to No. 7 is Grassfield, which added its second impressive victory Thursday as the Grizzlies beat Western Branch in extra innings. Up to No. 9 is the 2015 3A State Champions, Lafayette, which made the other big statement win this week with a blowout victory over Jamestown.

Entering the rankings this week at No. 14 is West Springfield, which moved to 6-0 on the season with victories over No. 18 Battlefield and Forest Park en route to the Spartans’ victory in the Mingo Bay Classic.

Also entering the rankings this week are co-No. 25s Lake Braddock and Lee-Davis. Lake Braddock handed No. 15 St. John’s College its second tough loss in a row on Wednesday as the Cadets also fell to Bishop O’Connell during the week. Lee-Davis knocked off new 5A member and 2015 4A State Champion, No. 13 Glen Allen on Thursday night.

No. 22 Covenant School went 4-0 on the week and is off to an 8-2 start. Also off to a good start is No. 17 Jefferson Forest, which is 5-0. No. 20 C.D. Hylton recovered from an opening night loss to Battlefield to sweep the Eddie Hope Let’s Play Two Classic.
