West Orange Defeats University To Advance To States

DELAND, FL—The University Titans took on the West Orange Warriors Tuesday night in an attempt to reach the 9A state tournament for the second consecutive season. Last year, the Titans were able to upset highly-ranked Olympia HS behind an impressive outing from 2017 LHP Logan Allen. Unfortunately for University, this year was different as they were on the receiving end of a dominating pitching performance from 2016 RHP Tyler Baum and 2017 RHP Cole Beavin. West Orange was able to take down University 3-0 and advance to the final four.

For the first four innings, there was not much surprise as no runs were scored and Allen and Baum had combined for 14 strikeouts. Baum, a North Carolina recruit, was sitting 88-92 mph and making University swing and miss with his advanced 72-76 mph curveball. As for Allen, he was sitting 87-90 mph and keeping the West Orange hitters off balance with an above-average 71-73 mph curveball and 77-78 mph changeup.

Offensive production and emotions escalated quickly in the top of the fifth inning when 2016 C and Winthrop commit Matthew Coello doubled to deep left field with one out. A few batters later, 2017 SS and Central Florida commit Chris Seise roped a single to left that brought in two runs. Allen and a University coach were actually ejected—for ambiguous reasons—after these two runs were plated.

Baum made quick work of the Titan lineup in the bottom half of the fifth and brought his strikeout total to ten on the night. Beavin then came in for the sixth and seventh innings and shut the door by striking out six University hitters.

West Orange will face off against highly-ranked Stoneman Douglas in the 9A state semifinals next week. The winner of this contest will face either Alonso or Columbus in the championship game.
