West Virginia Fall Review Event Analysis: Third Basemen

The West Virginia Fall Review took place on November 17th at Pro Performance RX giving our staff a final look this fall at some of the top prospects in West Virginia. Today we continue a series of articles analyzing the prospects in attendance with a look at those players that participated as primary third basemen (LISTED IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER).

 Drew Bailey, Bridgeport HS, 3B, 2023
Physical 6-foot-1, 175-pound right-handed hitter starts from a wide, square stance and utilizes a toe tap to initiate his swing. Showcased an above average feel for the barrel and present power to the pull side with a tendency to cut off his lower half. Registered an event best 91 mph bat exit velocity and ran a 7.25 60-yard dash. Displayed active feet and solid lateral range defensively with adequate 73 mph arm strength across the diamond from third base. Bailey continues to get better each time we see him.

Dustin Corley, Parkersburg South HS, 3B/RHP, 2021
5-foot-10, 185-pound left-handed hitter starts from a slightly open, athletic stance and initiates his swing with a toe-tap stride. The left-handed hitter showcased a slight uppercut swing with strength in his lower half and the ability to create backspin. His ability to use his lower half creates the potential to hit for power as he continues to develop. Registered a bat exit velocity of 79 mph and ran an 7.53 60-yard dash.  Corley continues to impress with his overall awareness at the plate. On the mound, he showcased a two-pitch mix. His fastball sat 73-75 with arm side run. His curveball showed 11/5 shape.

Nathan Currey, Parkersburg South HS, 3B/RHP, 2020
6-foot, 180-pound right-handed hitter starts from a slightly open stance and initiates his swing with a lift-and-replace stride. Showcased solid pop to the pull side while routinely staying behind the baseball. Displayed the ability to create some backspin with a bat exit velocity of 82 mph. Moves well at the corner and showed accurate 73 mph arm strength across the diamond. Two-way prospect sat 75-78 from a 3/4 arm slot with arm side run. Forkball is thrown out of the same slot as fastball with some bite at the plate. 

Aaron Forbes, University HS, 3B, 2022
6-foot-5, 210-pound right-handed hitter looks the part of an every day player at the college level right now. Forbes starts from a square stance and initiates his swing with a controlled leg-lift stride. Displayed balance and rhythm throughout his swing with advanced feel for the barrel. Registered an 88 mph bat exit velocity and displayed present gap power. Ran a 7.38 60-yard dash and showcased active feet defensively with a soft glove hand. Makes the body control play look routine and showed an ability to make throws with a 77 mph arm strength across the diamond.

Griffin Horowicz, Jefferson HS, 3B, 2022
6-foot, 170-pound right-handed hitter starts from a square stance and initiates his swing with a lift-and-replace stride. Showcased a short swing path with a line drive approach during BP with a bat exit velocity of 75 mph. He consistently found the barrel during his bp round. Defensively, Horowicz displayed a confident glove hand along with smooth fielding actions coupled with a 75mph arm across the diamond. Horowicz displayed a solid all-around skill set should continue to develop through strength gains and physical maturity. 

Morgan Little, Keyser HS, 3B, 2020
6-foot-2, 195-pound left-handed hitter starts from a open, athletic stance and utilizes a lift-and-replace stride to begin. Showcased balance throughout with limited lower half action and loose hands through the hitting zone. The ability to hit for power is evident through his build. Registered a bat exit velocity of 89 mph and ran a 7.75 60-yard dash, both personal bests. Displayed athletic defensive actions while routinely playing through the baseball with solid carry on throws of 70 mph across the diamond. Little has solidified himself as one of the top third-basemen in the state.

Grant SmithGrant Smith, George Washington, 3B, 2023
6-foot, 205-pound right-handed hitter took one of the loudest rounds of batting practice at the event. He starts from a square stance and initiates his swing with a short, toe tap stride. Showcased an aggressive lower half with a high finish resulting in routine backspin. Registered a 79 mph bat exit velocity and ran a 8.41 60-yard dash. Displayed a soft glove hand and active feet around the bag at third base with accurate 75 mph arm strength across the diamond.
