The Prep Baseball Report Western IA Open took place on August 6th, 2015 at Doc Ross Field on the campus of Iowa Western CC. The showcase featured prospects from the 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019 classes who showcased their talents in front of our scouting staff and college coaches.

Today we take a look at the position pitchers that were at the event. When we create this list we evaluate the overall package of abilities along with future projection at the college level.

Pitching Evaluations (Listed Alphabetically)

Brandon Anderson, RHP/1B, Omaha Skutt (NE), 2017
6-foot-2, 180-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Short stiff arm action on mound. Some downhill plane to fastball. Fastball shows varying cut and run action at 79-82 mph. 12/6 breaking ball has gradual break and avg. rotation. Slight cutting action on changeup with avg. fade. 7.78 runner. Strong build. Square stance. Short stride. Inverted swing plane. Flashes pop in bat with solid contact. Mid/pull approach. 84 mph exit velocity. Good feet and hands. Fields out front. Accurate arm. 76 mph across infield.

Jacob Bunz, 1B/LHP, Elkhorn South (NE), 2018
6-foot-2, 185-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. 8.01 runner. Athletic set-up in box. Leg kick trigger. Balanced swing. Solid pop to pull side of field. Short restricted finish. 75 mph exit velocity off tee. Solid fielder at first base. Usable hands and feet. Easy actions. 71 mph arm strength across diamond. Good balance and direction in delivery. Slight downhill plane with run on fastball at 73-76 mph. 12/6 breaking ball has solid shape and avg. depth. Changeup is thrown near fastball arm speed with wobbly action at bottom of zone.

Ashtin Eslick, RHP/SS, Sioux City West, 2016
6-foot-2, 170-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. On the mound; slight crouch at balance point. Lands open and towards first base side. Pie arm action. Fastball was 80-82 mph with cut action on a flat plane. Slider is thrown at 65-68 mph with flashes of depth and hard break when on top at release. 7.13 runner. Front heel turn trigger. Pull approach. Stays on backside at contact. Short finish. 80 mph exit velocity. Solid actions in field. Fields low to ground and out front. Funnels ball occasionally. Arm plays above average with accuracy and carry to bag. 79 mph arm strength across.

John Horner, OF/RHP, S. Sioux City (NE), 2017
6-foot, 175-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.22 runner. Athletic stance. Leg kick trigger. Deep load. Flashed solid contact to gaps with avg. power. 84 mph exit velocity. Aggressive routes to baseball. Solid actions. Long extended arm action. Above avg. carry and accuracy to target. 77 mph arm strength. Good balance and body control in delivery. Direction to plate and lands closed to target. Some wrap on back-side of arm circle. Fastball shows slight cutting action at 73-75 mph. 11/5 breaking ball at 62-63 mph with early break. Changeup with slight cut at 68-72 mph.

Tanner Hurt, SS/RHP, Gretna (NE), 2018
5-foot-8, 165-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.34 runner. Active load. Solid contact with mid/pull approach. Out and around at contact. 76 mph exit velocity. Usable glove and feet. Solid actions. Short quick release with above avg. accuracy to bag. 71 mph arm strength. Short balance point. Lands across body in delivery. Short arm action from ¾ slot. Crossfire-delivery. Slight run and sink on fastball at 74-76 mph. Sweeping 11/5 breaking ball with flashes of tight rotation and depth. Pushes changeup with slight cutting action.

Dillan Janak, LHP/1B, Harrisburg (SD), 2018
6-foot, 145-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. Follow arm on the mound. Short arm action from ¾ slot. Some Wrap and stab on backside. Throws strikes with 3 pitches. Fastball shows solid life at 75-77 mph with avg. sink. Breaking ball has 12/6 shape with depth and tight rotation. Changeup has arm side sink at 71-72 mph. 7.32 runner. Crouched stance. Stands up at contact. Lift in swing. Mid/away approach. 81 mph exit velocity off tee. Avg. feet with usable glove. Makes routine plays. Accurate throws to bag. 75 mph arm strength.

Jayden Johannsen, SS/RHP, Sioux Falls Washington (SD), 2019
6-foot-2, 155-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.12 runner. Long lean build. Square stance. Hands drop down to swing. Solid contact mid/away with flashes of pop to pull side. Short through hitting zone. 69 mph exit velocity. Usable glove and feet. Avg. range. Limited use of front side on throws causing tailing action. Solid accuracy to bag. 77 mph arm strength across infield. Projectable frame on mound. Long arm action with slight stab on back-side. Flies open early from balance point. Running tilt to fastball with avg. life at 74-77 mph. 11/5 shape on curveball with gradual break to plate. Changeup shows solid fade in bottom of zone. Split has wobbly cut action at 69-71 mph.

Tyler Maddison, LHP/OF, Albia, 2016
5-foot-10, 150-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. Clean arm action on mound. Minimal use of front side. Flies open on release. Fastball was flat for strikes at 76-78 mph with slight run. 12/6 shape on breaking ball with tight rotation- on side of ball occasionally. Shortens arm stroke on changeup with below avg. command. 7.28 runner. Closed stance. No stride. Stiff lower half in swing with limited rhythm. Mid/away approach. Line drive- ground ball pop in bat. 71 mph exit velocity. Avg. actions in outfield. Appropriate routes. Open front side early on throws creating slingy ¾ arm action. 79 mph arm strength.

Owen Martin, OF/RHP, Waverly (NE), 2016
5-foot-11, 160-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 6.97 runner. Aggressive swinger with quiet head to contact. Flat swing plane. Occasional lift. Avg. pop in bat. Solid contact with mid/pull approach. 84 mph exit velocity. Aggressive fielder with good actions in outfield. Fields out front and uses momentum on throws. Above avg. carry and accuracy to target. 85 mph arm strength. High leg kick delivery. Slightly uncontrolled front leg. Lands open to plate. Throws fastball for strikes at 75-78 mph. 12/6 breaking ball has good shape with gradual break. Slows arm slightly on changeup; flat action for strikes.

Aaron Nesbitt, OF/RHP, Sioux Falls O’Gorman (SD), 2017
5-foot-8, 145-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 7.06 runner. High hands. Big leg kick. Active load. Flashed solid contact to gaps. Clean bat path. Loose hands. 83 mph exit velocity off tee. Aggressive fielder with above avg. glove and long arm action. Good carry to target with accuracy at 83 mph. Simple mechanics. Stretch only. Front leg open in balance point. Minimal use of lower half in mechanics. Short arm action. Fastball has slight arm-side sink with avg. command to both sides of plate at 76-78 mph. Curveball has 12/6 shape with inconsistent release point at 64-68 mph.

Liam Owen, LHP/1B, Magic City (ND), 2016
6-foot, 180-pound left-handed hitting 2-way player. Up tempo delivery. Leaks out early from balance point. Lower arm slot. Hand is underneath at release. Varying cut and run on fastball at 75-77 mph. Slider shows tighter spin and depth than 1/7 breaking ball presently. Shows solid feel for changeup with fade at 68-69 mph. 7.5 runner. Closed stance. Loose hands. Oppo line drive contact/ yanks to pull side. Pop to pull side of field. 88 mph exit velocity off tee. Late glove position. Soft hands. Makes routine plays. Solid around bag. 72 mph arm strength at first base.

Garrett Rickels, SS/RHP, Calamus-Wheatland, 2017
5-foot-9, 145-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. 6.8 runner. Slight crouch. Leans over plate. Underneath at contact. Gap to gap approach. 76 mph exit velocity. Fields across body. Funnels baseball. Ok actions and range. Short quick release. Accurate arm to bag at 74 mph. Controlled delivery. Sound mechanics. Good direction to plate. Long clean arm action. OT slot. Fastball is straight with solid command at 74-77 mph. Breaking ball has 11/5 shape with gradual break to plate. Wrist is stiff causing flat action on changeup.

Colby Seuntjens, LHP, Maple Valley-Anthon-Oto, 2018
6-foot-2, 170-pound left-handed pitcher. Lean projectable build. Some hitch in balance point. Has good direction to plate; lands very open with front foot. Long clean arm action. Fastball shows arm-side sink at 79-82 mph. 1/7 breaking ball has solid shape and avg. rotation/break to plate. Sideways spin on slider with small break. Tends to shorten arm stroke on breaking ball. Strong follow in 2018 class with projection.

Hunter Waugh, RHP/3B, Omaha Burke (NE), 2018
6-foot-1, 180-pound right-handed hitting 2-way player. Good rhythm and tempo in delivery. Easy effort on fastball. ¾ arm slot with clean loose arm action. Fastball shows quality run and sink at 80-82 mph. Varying feel for breaking ball; tends to be on side causing flat spin. Changeup shows avg. life with slight run and sink action. Solid command of 3 pitches. 7.47 runner. Open to start. Strides square. Quiet actions in box. Shows pop to gaps. Out and around at contact occasionally. 82 mph exit velocity. Solid glove and feet. Easy arm action. Solid range. Avg. athlete. Sinking action on throws. Accurate arm. 78 mph arm strength.
