New Haven 11 Terre Haute South 6

The game featured two of the state?s premier arms: New Haven?s Brandon Pease (Valpo Commit) vs. Terre Haute South?s AJ Reed (Kentucky Commit). The offense however was the highlight of the game. New Haven got multiple hits from three different players: 2011 Lucas Salerno 4-4 (3 runs and 1 RBI), 2012 Kyle Sovine 3-4 (1 run and 1 RBI), and 2011 Randall Metzger 3-3 (3 runs and 2 RBIs). THS got HRs from 2011 Ricky Wheatfill (1-3, 1 RBI, 1 R) and 2012 Daniel Marlow (2-2, 2 RBIs, 2 Rs). Spencer Place picked up the win throwing an inning and a third.

 

Munster vs. Mt. Vernon: Canceled due to weather.

Munster 9 Terre Haute South 5

Muntser started out scoring two runs in the first of THS starter Brent Mulvihill. THS picked up a run in the second to caught the lead to one, but Munster answered with a huge third inning bringing six runners across the plate. THS tried to fight back into the game, but Munster pitching was able to limit them to just five runs for the game.

Senior John Hinkleman got the start for Munster picking up the win throwing four strong innings allowing three earned runs with his fastball sitting in the 81-84 mph range all day. Junior Ethan Flahaven finished off the game throwing the last three innings giving up just two runs on four hits.

Munster got offense from all over the lineup with seven different players recording a hit. Senior Brooks Platt had a solid day at the plate picking up 3 hits, including a 3B, while driving in three and scoring once. Junior LF Chris Slivka also had multiple hits going 2-4 with an RBI, a run, and drawing a BB. Junior Scott Jerge was the third Munster hitter that picked up multiple hits going 2-5, driving in two, and scoring once.

Terre Haute South?s offense was mostly from the 3-4 hitters both reaching base in all four of their at-bats. Three hole hitter AJ Reed went 2-2 with a 3B, two RBIs, two runs, and 2 walks. Cleanup batter senior third baseman Ricky Wheatfill was on the ball all day going 4-4, each of them hard line drives, he also picked up an RBI.

 

Mt. Vernon 9 New Haven 8

New Haven jumped out to the early lead going up 5-2 after three innings. After New Haven added another run in the top of the 5th Mt. Vernon?s offense came out scoring seven runs in the bottom of the frame to go up 9-7. New Haven looked as if they were posed for a comeback in the top of the seventh after leading off the inning with a 3B by Senior Trevor Waidelich and a 2B by Junior Scott Ferguson to cut the lead to one run, but could not drive in the tying run giving Mt. Vernon the win.

Mt. Vernon?s Sophomore Ross Canada picked up the win after coming in for starter Caleb Hames. Canada threw the final three innings allowing two runs, only one earned, while limiting New Haven?s strong offense to just three hits in those innings. Eight of Mt. Vernon?s hitters reached base lead by Sophomore Austin Doerflein 3-4 and a run and Junior Troy Paris 2-3 with a 3B, RBI, BB and a run. Also contributing were: Sophomore River Vanzant who picked up three RBIs and a 2B, Senior Jason Stemple going 2-4 with a run, and Junior Aaron Roberts picking up a double and two walks.

New Haven started Senior Andy Jones who came out strong keeping Mt. Vernon off balance at the beginning changing speeds and hitting his spots, but after a few hits and errors had to be replaced in the 5th by Junior Kyle Sovine. New Haven?s offense was highlighted by senior leadoff hitter Logan baker reaching base in four of five at-bats, Senior Randall Metzger 2-3 (RBI, 2 Rs, HBP),  Brandon Pease 2-3 (2B, BB), and Junior Scott Ferguson 2-4 (2B, RBI, R). New Haven also got RBIs from Seniors Lucas Salerno and Zac Brown.

 

Munster 13 New Haven 3

Munster came out swinging from start of the game and with the pitching of Anthony Gomez cruised to a 10 run lead. Munster scored in each of the first four innings taking a 7-0 lead. They would add six more in the top of the 7th. New Haven got some offense in the bottom of the innings, but only were able to get three runs back of their 13 run deficit.

Junior Anthony Gomez started out the game for Munster throwing 6+ and picking up the win. He kept New Haven off balance with a good mixture of fastballs and off speed pitches. He cruised through the first six innings without much trouble. In the 7th though he allowed the first three runners on and had to be replaced to finish the game.

The hitting came from all over the lineup for Munster, lead by Junior Chris Slivka, who doubled in his first three at bats and ended up with four hits and scoring three times. Senior Adam Larimer also picked up three hits and Junior Tony Cress showed his pop hitting a solo homerun.

 

Munster was the winner of the tournament finishing 2-0.

 

Terre Haute South 10 Mt. Vernon 7

Terre Haute South took the early lead going up 3-0 after the third inning. Mt. Vernon cut one off of the deficit in the top of the 4th, but THS answered with six in the bottom of the inning to take a 9-1 lead. THS took a 10-2 lead into the 7th and Mt. Vernon tried to make the comeback, but fell a few runs short.

Junior Daniel Marlow started the game for THS throwing 6 1/3 innings to pick up the win before being replaced by Sophomore Daniel Olds who picked up the last two outs. Marlow gave up seven runs (6 earned), but only two in the first 6 innings and struck out 5. Senior Ricky Wheatfill continued his hot hitting in this game picking up three more hits (7 in 2 games), including 2 2Bs, a RBI, and a run. To go along with his pitching performance Marlow also add a 2B, 2 RBIs, and 2 R. Junior Colton Rupska contributed with 2 RBIs, a run, and a 3B.

Even though Mt. Vernon lost they still managed to pick up 13 hits. Senior Bo Harris and Junior Aaron Robert both went 3-4 driving in 2 runs, Harris also scored twice. Sophomore River Vanzant picked up one hit, a homerun to right-centerfield.
