4/27/19

At Leland - Uncommitted. Long and lean frame with wide shoulders that projects more strength. Catching skills ahead of bat currently, but bat still has some projection available. Defensively showed a quiet setup giving the umpire a strong view of the pitches. His ability to block and move laterally stood out along with his very strong glove hand. Glove hand is able to firm up and work from under the baseball showing a strong wrist able to turn the glove for strikes. Footwork on throws to second was clean allowing ball to transfer quickly. Arm is solid with some projection still on the overall strength. Was on bag regularly between innings (2.08-2.19 Pop) with quick release that is also able to throw behind the runners. Catching, throwing and blocking skills effectively shut down opposing teams run game making them have to play base-to-base. Slightly crouched stance with hands wide away from body. Toe-tap timing as hands bounce before pulling back; bounce causes hands to add length in swing. Quick arc of the barrel working through the zone quickly showing contact oriented swing. Bat has a chance to make refinements as he flashed some bat speed and good stretch between upper and lower half.

3/14/19

At Santa Cruz - Large frame with width in shoulders showed good glove behind the plate. Glove hand regularly in a strong position, pulling some pitches back into the zone. Used his instincts and was able to get Lonardo back on track and out of jams. Quick back picks caught a runner off 1st late in game effectively killing a rally. Between innings showed a strong arm that was 2.16-2.22 down to 2nd. Looks like his catching skills can continue to improve and showed strong blocking all game. Doubled in 2nd AB down the left field line driving the ball and having good stride length on his way into 2nd base. Will have to get another look later in season.

2/21/18 - Lean 6-foot-0 160-pound catcher with present day tools that will show up bigger as he physically matures. Schwartz is strongest right now as a receiver and defensive catcher, with soft hands and timing to present the ball well. He shifts to block balls in the dirt with agility. His throwing arm will have to improve, as his throws to 2nd base on steal attempts were north of 2.20. Offensively he can loose up and let his hands get through contact better, but again, some of that is a function of strength.
