8/22/19: Whitcomb flexed some muscle on the Cape, launching 8 home runs (good for second in the league) while posting a .303 ISO (.303/.371/.606) over 121 plate appearances. Whitcomb is a linear hitter with some lunge in his cuts, but his hips work well and he consistently demonstrated an impressive ability to hit the ball in the air with authority. A 55 runner underway, there’s an extra-base gear in the profile despite modest times out of the box, which further helps the pop to play via doubles tallies, and pushes the future playable power grade comfortably to above-average. Whitcomb can get caught out front on even solid off-speed offerings, though he’s also proven capable of punishing mistakes, giving pitchers a small margin for error on secondary stuff. He’s a capable defender on the dirt and should be an asset on the bases. The UCSD middle infielder helped his stock considerably this summer and currently projects as a Day Two target for next June’s MLB Draft. (Faleris)
