5-foot-8, 160-pound sure handed catching prospect. One of the top unsigned catchers in Michigan's 2015 class. Above average setup and base behind the plate, does excellent job of limiting his movements receiving the baseball. Great mobility with his block skills. Short arm action and quick transfers allow for pop times of 2.02-2.18. Soft hands with good footwork on the infield, threw 78 mph across the infield. Ran a 7.34 60-yard dash. Starts with an open stance, getting back to even with quick direct hand path to the baseball and excellent extension through the baseball. Bat speed registered registered at 80 mph.
8/30/13 Mercer has all the tools it is just a matter of time for him to physically mature. He continues to improve. Good actions behind the plate and in the infield. Short arm action behind dish with 2.07-2.19 pop time. Showed soft hands at short. Threw the ball extremely accurately. At the plate used the whole field. Going to hit. Keeps it simple. Short path. Line-drive stroke. Definite follow.
2/9/13 Mercer is only 5-foot-6 but is a good athlete. Best profiles as a catcher. Threw 2.29 pop times with a short arm action. Ran 7.77 in the 60 but should get much better as he adds strength. Offensively- He is short to the ball. Stays compact. Tried to use the whole field and go the other way.
