Diamond Pro Workout (January 14, 2017)

Malinka stands a slight 5-foot-7 145 pounds. Recorded a time of 5.3 seconds when going from home to first. Offensively- Feet are shoulder width at set up with knees bent. Front foot is slightly open. Hands are aligned right above back shoulder. Starts with a small stride that opens his front foot. Hips are rotational to ball, and weight shifts away from home plate during swing. Takes both hands back on his load and swing path is direct to the ball and flat. Long extension through ball with bat finishing around front shoulder. Exit velocity of 66 MPH off the tee. Additional lower half effort with feed up through his swing. Defensively- Sets up with feet slightly wider than shoulders. Knees are stiff and most bend comes at the waist. Ball is fielded between feet and then funneled to midsection. Shuffles feet together to gain ground towards his target. Throws with a low ¾ slot and produced a velocity of 66 MPH. Deeper in the legs at his fielding position will improve glove positioning and he can drive through his shuffle to gain more momentum through the back end of his release.
