Koester stands a lanky 6-foot-3, 175-pounds with a highly projectable frame. At the plate he uses a loose relaxed approach with a bat waggle prior to the pitch. On the pitch he uses a front side stride, slight back load for timing. Drives hands to the ball on a short path, barrel path is mostly level through contact with slight tilt, full extension, repeatable, pull-side power with an exit velocity of 83 mph from the left-side. Defensively he stays behind the ball with average footwork, fields from a low base, uses a clean transfer and release from a mid 3/4 slot, above average arm-strength at 83 mph across the diamond. On the mound the projection continues. RHP who uses a solid tempo to his delivery, high leg lift, hands at chin height before he drives forward. Opens front hip on the stride using hip/shoulder separation, firm front side. Releases the ball from a power 3/4-slot, long fluid arm-action with a fastball that peaked at 84 mph, sitting 81-84. Curveball sat 68-70 mph with 10/5 shape, tight at times. Overall, very athletic player with upside all over the field. The bat keeps the dual player conversation at the next-level alive.
2019 Top Prospect Games (August 20, 2016)
Showed very well at the event for me. On the mound, the fastball touched 78 mph out of a clean ¾ arm slot. The spin pitch is slurvy, touching 66 mph, more fastball hand speed is needed for the pitch to improve. The delivery is clean, feet line up, and the tracking is on the right path. The glove side needs to be harnessed a bit as he gets stretched out when he releases the ball. Ideally, his glove should be inside his body frame at release. Love the projection of the frame, 6-foot-2, 170-pounds. Defensively- showed well at the hot corner. The glove is solid, the feet work well and he threw 78 across the diamond with ease and accuracy. Good looking defender. Offensively- Ran a 4.88 down the line on his dig to first, that will have to improve as he matures. The bat is clean as the hands work well. Tee exit velocity of 80 mph. A left-handed hitting makes he even more intriguing. Starts the swing with and even footed start, even hands setup. The path is clean, slightly uphill with some lift. The bottom half is under control and he stays on the ball well. Squared up the ball during the game as well.
