#2 Lake Central Survives Against Munster

Given the weather conditions dropped nearly 20 degrees, along with the week long initiative to use wood bats, Munster vs. Lake Central was bound to be a low scoring affair Tuesday night. The Indians battled through a tremendous performance by Munster's Anthony Gomez (2012: unsigned Senior), to pull out a 1-0 victory. Gomez threw six (6) strong innings, striking out six (6) while giving up just one (1) run.

Lake Central had a crafty left handed pitcher of their own, Junior Nick Kellams. Kellams has shown early this season that he can do damage at the plate; however, today he flipped the script, and did most of his work from the rubber. Nick threw five (5) innings, giving up seven (7) hits, while striking out four (4). The pace was fast, as both pitchers worked ahead frequently, to line up an exciting finish in this cross conference rivalry.

In the bottom of the 4th, Lake Central threatened. As Jimmy McNamara (2012: committed to Central Michigan), reached on an error, Alec Olund singled with two outs, to line up a play at the plate. Munster's Center Fielder, Mark Strjbak, quickly came up with the ball, and released a strike to home, tagging out McNamara.

Meanwhile, the unsung hero of the game, Austen Wagoner (2012: unsigned), came in relief of Kellams in the top half of the 6th, striking out two of of the four hitters he faced. Then, in the bottom half of the 6th inning, Wagoner reached base on an infield single, and advanced to second on a throwing error. Tony Majstorov (2013: uncommitted), then bunted Austen over to third, setting up a great RBI situation for senior Ryan Pachowicz (uncommitted). Pachowicz came through, lacing a single up the middle, to knock in the only run of the game.

In the top half of the 7th, Wagoner resumed right where he left off, striking out two, to get the win (W 1-0; 2IP, H, 4K). Austen was steady at 79-83mph, hitting 85mph on two occasions.

Surprising Player of the Day: Munster Senior Chris Slivka (committed to Emory University in Atlanta); who went 3-4 with three singles and great bat control.
