This spring, Shawn Reid and Griffin Weir, both juniors at Amherst Steele, will form one of the best pitching tandems in the State of Ohio.

While Weir has been earning his share of the headlines, Reid is more than deserving in his own right.

At the February 18th Pre-Season Showcase, Reid stood out as one of the top performers.

His scouting report notes:

5-foot-11, 190-pound prospect with solid, muscular build. Uses quick arm action through a high ¾ arm slot. Shows 85-87 mph fastball that gets on you quick. He shows command of a curveball that sits between 69-72 mph with sharp, late 11/5 breaking action. His changeup is thrown near fastball arm speed and shows effective arm side run at 78-79 mph. While he doesn’t have much projection, he is a strike thrower with command of three solid pitches. Definite D1 follow.

Reflecting on his performance, Reid said, “I felt great about my performance at this past showcase. I felt like I threw strikes, and had good control of my off-speed.”

In Reid’s opinion, his mental focus separates him from other prospects.

“I think my best tool as a baseball player is that I stay focused, and don't let the little things get to me.”

This spring, Reid has set forth both an individual and team goal.

“As a team I would like to win our conference. As a player I would like to be all-conference.”

But, it won’t be easy.

“The toughest team in our conference this year will most likely be Westlake. They are always a tough team.”

Once the spring season commences, Reid will be playing this summer for the North Coast Gladiators, which features 2013 LHP Eric Lauer, 2014 RHP Cody Callaway, 2014 catcher Adam Vasil, and 2012 Marshall recruit RHP Brandyn Sittinger.

Right now, Reid is hearing from several D1 programs such as Miami, Akron, and Youngstown State.

He will be participating in the Top Prospect Games in June at Prasco Park.
