2013 Underclass Spotlight: Tony Winters (Watkins Memorial)

Tony Winters

Tony Winters, LHP, Watkins Memorial

The class of 2013 is loaded with left-handed pitching talent. However, Watkins Memorial’s Tony Winters may be slipping under the radar.

In January, Winters attended PBR’s Pre-Season Underclassmen Invite Only Showcase.  At the showcase the lefty turned a few heads, both on the mound and from the outfield.

Here is what PBR had to say about Tony:

Smallish body, shows good physical strength, but little projection. Good skills guy (5.11 40 yd on concrete). Centerfield type who shows life in body, good range and solid 3-4 grade arm (76-77 mph). Offensively, contact guy with occasional pop - shows good load and bat speed into zone with some lower body tourque. Will need to tweak from occasionally pulling off pitch. On the mound, the southpaw shows balanced delivery with moderate arm speed through 3/4 slot. Shows some late movement on fastball, ranging 81-82 mph. Has good feel on slurvy type curve (70-71 mph). Change is somewhat straight but sells am action (67-68). Likely a Mid-major D-1 prospect.

The 5 foot 10 inch, 180 pound junior has not had any personal contact with college coaches, but it is still very early in the recruiting process.

Tony has a few items that he will look closely at when he makes his college choice.  “Definitely academics. The campus setting and if it's close to home.”

This offseason, the southpaw has been working several areas to help him get ready.  “I have been working out, doing bullpens, and hitting every chance I get.”

Playing in the tough OCC, Winters knows it will be a tough battle all season.  “I hope our team continues getting better because I believe this team will go far, and I hope I continue getting better.  Our toughest opponents will probably be either New Albany or Olentangy Orange.

This summer Winters will be seen taking the hill and roaming the outfield for Pickerington Legion Post 283.
