At 5-foot-9, 155-pounds, Ethan Cleary is what we refer to in the scouting world as undersized.  However, what he lacks in size, he certainly makes up for with ability as the RHP/OF (2015, North Oldham HS) put on a show at the Top Prospect Games Event last Wednesday at Western Kentucky University.

Cleary began his day showing a plus arm from the outfield during Team Gray’s pregame when his top throw registered at 90 mph.  He showed fluid and athletic feet, playing through the ball well with accurate throws on the third base bag.

At the plate, he showed quick hands with good bat speed through the zone in going 2-for-5 with a double and 3 RBI.

But it was what he did on the mound that had scouts buzzing.

Showing an extremely quick arm, Cleary’s first pitch popped the glove at 88 mph, and he proceeded to sit in the 86-88 range consistently, touching 89 once during his two-inning stint.   He showed good command of his 76-78 mph slider that generated several swings-and-misses and was one of the best of the event with sharp/late break.  Cleary also showed feel for a 75 mph changeup that he threw with fastball arm action.

Stay tuned for more player features and write-ups of all players over the coming days from the Top Prospect Games Event.
