2016 Preview Showcase: Middle Infield Analysis

On Saturday, October 18th over 50 players participated in the 2016 Preview Showcase at Grand Park in Westfield, IN.  Despite the cold, rainy weather, the players toughed it out showcasing their talents and abilities to the PBR Indiana staff. Below we analyze the middle infielders from the event. 

Top Middle Infielders (In Alphabetical Order)

Beau Ayres, SS/2B, Evansville North HS, 2016: 5-foot-9, 155 pound Junior infielder showcased athletic actions in the field with soft hands and a quick, clean exchange.  Fluid feet and plays through the baseball well.  Across the diamond was 76 mph.  Ran a 7.69-60.  At the plate hits from a slight crouch setup.  Minimal load, with a short stride.  Possesses average bat speed. Long, uphill path to the ball.  Hard contact, consistently hits line drives.  Registered an exit velo of 79 mph.  

Jordan Cox, SS/2B, Zionsville HS, 2016: 6-foot-2, 165 pound MIF showed good range up the middle.  Possesses above average hands with fluid feet.  Clean exchange and plays through the baseball.  From a short arm action was 80 across the diamond with some carry. Ran a 7.31-60.  Offensively, starts balanced with a high back elbow.  Loads back and uses a leg kick.  Average bat speed.  Gets  to extension.  Line drive hitter with some pop.  Registered an exit velo of 81 mph.   

Tyler Kenjic, SS/3B, Hobart HS, 2016: 6-foot, 175 pound Junior infielder  showcased above average hands defensively with fluid feet.  Quick, clean exchange.  Across the diamond was 76 mph.  Ran a 7.28-60.  At the plate starts open using a leg kick.  Average use of the lower half.  Displayed an overall good approach with a long path to the baseball.  Shows some hand speed.  Registered an exit velo of 82 mph.  Line drive type hitter with gap potential.  

Alan Lozer, 2B/MIF, North Central HS, 2016: 5-foot-11, 155 pound Junior shows soft hands with a quick, clean exchange.  Fluid footwork and plays through the baseball.  Across the diamond was 79 and accurate.  Ran a 7.50-60. At the plate the LHH starts in a balanced setup with a high back elbow.  Short stride and smooth load.  Quick hands with a level path to the ball.  Line drive hitter who consistently squared up the ball.  Registered an exit velo of 75 mph.   

Nicholas McHale, 2B/SS, Mahomet-Seymour HS (IL), 2016: 6-foot, 150 pound MIF possesses average hands defensively with an accurate arm across the diamond at 72 mph.  Lacks elite foot speed, but shows fluid footwork.  Ran a 7.43-60.  At the plate starts in an athletic setup and slightly open front foot.  Short stride, average balance.  Level swing plane.  Registered an exit velo of 75 mph.  

Jordan Schaffer, SS/2B, West Vigo HS, 2016: 5-foot-10, 140 pound MIF possesses average hands defensively.  Exchange is clean with the ability to get rid of it.  Feet are fluid, but lacks elite foot speed.  Plays through the ball well.  Ran a 7.57-60.  Across the diamond was 75.  Offensively, starts balanced .  Arm bar during the load.  Top tap, short stride.  Level path, long swing.  Good balance throughout.  Registered an exit velo of 76 mph.  

Luke Schneider, SS/2B, Penn HS, 2016: 5-foot-10, 160 pound MIF possesses above average hands in the field.  Clean exchange with fluid feet.  Plays through the baseball with some athleticism.  Ability to pick it. Across the diamond was 76 with accuracy.  Ran a 7.47-60.  At the plate starts open, uses a leg kick.  Short level path to the ball.  Showed the ability to hit to all fields.  Fluid rhythm throughout the swing with good balance.  Line drive hitter.  Registered an exit velo of 76 mph. 

Samuel Smith, SS/2B, Benton Central HS, 2016: 5-foot-11, 172 pound MIF showcased athletic actions in the field with above average hands.  Fluid feet.  Clean exchange, quick release and plays through the baseball with athleticism.  Accurate arm across the field at 79 mph.  Ran a 7.34-60.  At the plate starts blanced with high hands.  Toe tap for timing.  Hands drop during the load.  Long path to the baseball, consistently drives the ball to the opposite field. Over rotates at times.  Registered an exit velo of 84 mph.

Joey Vershay, 2B/SS, Victory Christian HS, 2016: 5-foot-8, 130 pound Junior infielder was 67 across the diamond.  Arm action is long and throws from a high ¾ slot.  Plays on his heels, average hands and feet.  Aggressive defender.  Ran a 7.56-60.  Offensively, hits from an athletic setup.  Loads back and uses a short stride.  Short, level path to the baseball; line drive type hitter.  Registered an exit velo of 72 mph.  

JB Washburn, SS, Hamilton Southeastern HS, 2016: 6-foot-3, 152 pound MIF showcased athletic actions in the field.  Feet are fluid.  Clean exchange.  Plays through the ball with athleticism.  Average glove.  Good body control.  Across the diamond was 78 with carry.   Ran a 7.27-60.   Offensively, starts balanced with high hands.  Long stride.  Loads back.  Level path to the ball produces line drives.  Stiff front side.  Registered an exit velo of 78 mph.  

Caleb Wiles, SS/3B, Rushville HS, 2016: 5-foot-11, 145 pound infielder showcased raw actions defensively.  Accurate throws across the diamond at 73 mph from a ¾ slot and long arm action.  Ran a 7.31-60.  Offensively, starts from a wide base.  Hands drop during the load.  Level swing plane.  Registered an exit velo of 68 mph.   

Devin Williams, 2B/MIF, Lawrence North HS, 2016: 5-foot-10, 145 pound MIF possesses average hands with fluid feet.  Exchange is slow.  Plays through the baseball.  Lacks elite foot speed.  Ran a 7.84-60.  Across the diamond was 69 mph.  Offensively, starts in a balanced setup.  Minimal load with a short stride.  Bat drags through the zone.  Short, level path to the ball.  Contact hitter, lacks power and bat speed.  Registered an exit velo of 70 mph.
