2017 Underclass Preview: Middle Infielders Analysis

On Sunday, October 18th, we hosted the 2017 Underclass Preview Showcase at Grand Park in Westfield, IN.  


Below we analyze the middle infielders that participated in the event.

ALPHABETICAL ORDER

Ryan Beck, SS, Mt. Vernon HS, 2017: 6-foot-1, 170 pounder ran a 7.51-60 and was 78 across the infield.  Average hands in the field with fluid feet.  Exchange was clean but slow.  Lacks premium foot speed.  Plays through the ball well.  At the plate hits from an open setup, long stride.  Average use of the lower half with average balance.  Possesses some bat speed with a good approach.  Short, uphill swing plane.  Showcased some pop to his pull-side.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 80 mph.  

Brenden Bube, SS, Lanesville HS, 2017: 5-foot-9, 160 pounder ran a 7.63-60 and was 80 across the diamond.  Defensively, possesses soft hands with fluid feet. Foot speed is average.  Exchange is quick.  Strong arm across the diamond, above average  defender, projects more as a 2B at the next level.  At the plate hits from a balanced setup with a smooth load.  Stride is short, slight leg kick.  Good approach to the baseball, line drive hitter.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 76.

Adisyn Coffey, SS, Delta HS, 2017: Athletic frame at 6-foot-1, 165 pounds.  Ran a 6.96-60 and was 87 across the diamond.  Possesses athletic actions with soft hands and quick, fluid feet.  Plays through the ball with athleticism.  Offensively, showcased above average bat speed.  Hits from an athletic, open setup, smooth load.  Short stride.  Level swing plane with good rhythm.  Line drive hitter.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 87 mph. 

Jarrett Jaques, SS, New Palenstine HS, 2017: 5-foot-10, 145 pounder ran a 7.34-60 and was 74 across the diamond.  Possesses  sure hands with fluid footwork.  Packs during the exchange.  Plays through the baseball well.  Long arm action.  Offensively, this from a balanced setup, loading back.  Toe tap.  Long, level path to the baseball.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 76 mph. 

Evan Kahre, SS, Evansville Central HS, 2017: 6-foot-1, 155 pound MIF ran a 7.00-60 and was 78 across the infield.  Above average defender with sure hands.  Fluid footwork with a clean exchange.  Plays through the baseball.  At the plate hits from an open stance and loads back.  Stride is short and has good balance.  Approach is good.  Short, level path to the baseball with some rhythm.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 82 mph.  

Tanner Kolbe, SS, Edgewood HS, 2017: 5-foot-11, 150 pounder ran a 7.19-60 and was 77 across the infield.  Solid defender with a quick, clean exchange.  Plays through the baseball with short, quick feet.  At the plate the LHH hits from a tall setup.  Toe tap.  Smooth load, level swing plane.  Good balance throughout the swing, athletic finish.  Displayed the ability to get to extension.  Lacks elite bat speed.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 76 mph.   

Drew Mathies, SS, Shelbyvile HS, 2017: 5-foot-11, 165 pounder ran a 6.86-60 and was 76 across the infield.  Showcase above average hands with a clean exchange.  Short, quick arm action with some arm strength.  Fluid feet.  At the plate this from a crouch type setup, stride is short.  Small back load, average bat speed.  Short, level swing plane.  Barreled up the baseball during BP.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 81 mph.  

Dakota Muth, SS, Heritage Christian HS, 2017: 5-foot-7, 145 pounder ran a 7.44-60 and was 65 across the infield.  Long, high ¾ arm action with some accuracy.  Overall average actions up the middle, projects as a 2B at the next level.  At the plate hits from a tall set up and uses a leg kick.  Average balance in the swing with partial use of the lower half.  Short, level path to the baseball.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 76 off the tee. 

Zach Orn, SS, Eastside HS, 2017: 5-foot-10, 155 pounder ran a 6.96-60 and was 81 across the field.  Defensively showcased quick, fluid footwork.  Plays through the baseball well.  Good hands.  Quick, clean exchange.  At the plate the LHH hits from a tall, open stance.  Leg kick.  Good hand speed with above average bat speed.  Short path with fluid rhythm.  Possesses some pull-side pop.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 86 mph.   

Austin Pizer, SS, Highland HS, 2021: Young 5-foot-3, 120 pounder.  Still raw defensively and needs to mature physically. Fields the ball clean with a clean exchange.  Across the diamond was 62 mph.  At the plate hits from the left side out of a balanced setup.  Long stride.  Showcased average bat speed for his age from a level path.  At times gets out front.  Good balance.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 70 mph. 

Tyler Powers, SS, Lafayette Central Catholic HS, 2017: 5-foot-9, 145 pounder ran a 7.06-60 and was 81 across the field from a short, loose arm action.  Feet are active and quick.  Exchange was quick.  Solid actions.  Possesses some athletic twitch.  Offensively, hits from a balanced setup with no load.  Slight leg kick.  Average bat speed from a short, level swing plane.  Pull-side hitter.  Has some stiffness in the swing.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 79 mph.   

Trey Puckett, SS, Richard County HS (IL), 2017: 5-foot-10, 145 pounds ran a 7.44-60 and was 68 across the infield.  Average actions,  tendency to field the ball deep.  Moves well, but feet can get flat.   LHH hits from a balanced setup, smooth load back.  No stride, good balance.  Bat speed is average.  Short level swing plane.  Contact type hitter.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 67 mph. 

Adam Quigley, 2B, Lawrence North HS, 2017: 5-foot-11, 175 pounds ran a 7.35-60 and was 71 across the infield.  Possesses average hands defensively with a long, clean exchange.  Needs to improve foot speed.  At the plate hits out of slightly open, crouch setup.  Loads back, long stride.  Tendency to dive.  Average balance in the swing.  Level path to the baseball.  Finishes wide and one handed.  Made hard contact during BP, recorded a high exit velocity of 73 mph off the tee. 

Wade Rankin, SS, Columbus North HS, 2017: 5-foot-9, 160 pounds ran a 7.28-60 and was 74 across the diamond.  Average hands in the field, quick, fluid footwork.  Tendency to take too many steps.  Exchange is clean.  Tendency to field on his heels.  Short arm action with average strength.  At the plate hits from an open setup, using a short stride.  Possesses some bat speed with quick hands.  Short path to the baseball, line drive hitter.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 83 mph.   

Jason Reis, SS, Highland HS, 2020: Young 5-foot-7, 150 pounder was 66 across the INF.  Average hands in the field.  Needs to quicken up the exchange.  Feet are heavy.  At the plate hits from a balanced setup, loads back.  Good balance. Shows some rhythm.  Long bat path.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 76 mph.   

Michael Rocco, SS, Zionsville HS, 2017: 6-foot, 155 pounder ran a 6.86-60 and was 79 across the infield.  Showcased soft hands with fluid footwork.  Exchange is clean but needs to speed it up.  At the plate hits from an open setup, small load back.  Stride is short.  Average bat speed, level path.  Pull-side type hitter.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 80 mph.  

Carson Smith, SS, McCutcheon HS, 2017: Long, lean frame at 6-foot-2, 170 pounds.  Ran a 7.48-60 and was 73 across the diamond.  Average actions and hands.  Feet are fluid.  Lacks premium foot speed. Short, ¾ arm action.  At the plate hits from crouch setup, not stride.  No load, fair approach to the baseball.  Bat tends to drag through the zone.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 79 mph.   

Nicholas Sprinkle, SS, Rushville HS, 2017: 5-foot-10, 150 pounder ran a 7.33-60 and was 75 across the diamond.  Showcased average hands defensively, with fluid footwork.  Offensively hit from a slight crouch setup, smooth load.  Long stride.  Level path to the baseball, line drive type hitter.  Showed the ability to use all fields.  Recorded a high exit velocity of 74 mph.  

Jackson Williams, 2B, Brebeuf HS, 2017: 6-foot, 155 pounds ran a 7.50-60 and was 72 across the diamond.  Average defender with average hands and fluid feet.  Tendency to pack during the exchange.  Gets on his heels when fielding the ball.  Short, high ¾ arm action with average strength.  At the plate hits from a tall, slightly open setup.  Smooth back load.  Stride is short.  Level swing plane.  Line drive type hitter, recorded a high exit velocity of 71.
