On Sunday, October 18th, we hosted the 2017 Underclass Preview Showcase at Grand Park in Westfield, IN.  

Below we analyze the pitchers that participated in the event.

ALPHABETICAL ORDER

Ryan Beck, RHP, Mt. Vernon HS, 2017: 6-foot-1, 170 pounds pitches from a high ¾ slot with above average arm speed.  Short arm action.  Easy effort, simple delivery.  Smooth rhythm, level shoulders.  Good line to the plate, lands square, finishing upright.  Fastball was thrown for a strike at 78-81.  Slider sat 66-70, tends to slow his arm down.  Changeup was good sink and fade action and thrown for a strike at 69-70. 

Brenden Bube, RHP, Lanesville HS, 2017: 5-foot-9, 160 pounds  shows quick arm speed from a ¾ slot.  Slight stab on the backside.  Good balance point, high effort.  Shoulders are uphill.  Stays in the line, lands square.  Athletic finish.  Fastball is thrown for a strike at 80-83.  Silder shows sharp action and thrown for a strike at 70-72 mph; good pitch.  Changeup was thrown with fastball arm speed displaying sink at 70 mph.  

Chad Colbert, RHP, Hamilton Southeastern HS, 2017: 6-foot-1, 160 pounds pitches from an over the top/high ¾ slot.  Arm action was stiff with a stab on the backside.  Shows some rhythm with uphill shoulders.  Stays in line.  Fastball was erratic but shows some sink at 72-75.  Breaking ball lacks identity at 61-65.  

Adisyn Coffey, RHP, Delta HS, 2017: 6-foot-1, 165 pounds, pitches from a high ¾ slot with quick arm speed.  Clean mechanics, athletic.  Easy effort in the delivery with smooth rhythm.  Good direction, athletic finish.  Fastball was hard and kept in the zone at 82-84.  Breaking ball has a 10/4 shape with gradual movement at 66-69.  Changeup was straight and thrown with near fastball arm speed and thrown for a strike at 75-76.  

Riley Crean, RHP, Bloomington North HS, 2017: Athletic frame at 6-foot-3, 175 pounds.  Shows good direction  with a clean arm action.  Fastball was 77-80 and thrown for a strike.   Good curveball at 65-67 for a strike and kept down in the strike zone.  Changeup sat 70-73.  Slow, deliberate delivery.  Good balance and rhythm.  Stays in line, lands square.  Above average arm speed.  With more use of the lower half should see a velocity increase. 

Chase Gross, RHP, Harrison HS, 2017: 5-foot-10, 150 pounds, pitches from a high ¾ arm action with some arm speed.  Arm action shows a wrap.  Good balance point with regular effort.  Closed, uphill shoulders, lands closed.  Works across the body with a slight side saddle delivery.  Inward turn.  Fastball was 76-78, runs away from RHH’s.  Breaking ball shows gradual movement at 61-65 from a 10/4 shape.  Changeup is thrown with near fastball arm speed showing some sink at 70-74. 

Gabe Humphrey, RHP, Scecina HS, 2017: 6-foot-4, 185 pounder pitches from an over the top/high ¾ slot with average arm speed, long arm action.  Slight pause at the balance point, regular effort in the delivery.  Rhythm is choppy.  Falls off towards 3B side, lands closed.  Fastball was 73-75.  Breaking ball has an 11/5 shape, erratic in the zone at 57-58.  Changeup sat 61-64. 

Jarrett Jaques, RHP, New Palestine HS, 2017: 5-foot-10, 145 pound righty pitches from a long, high ¾ arm action.  Average arm speed.  Shows some rhythm in the delivery.  Lands closed, falls off towards 1B side.  Front side needs to improve. Fastball was 72-74.  Slow breaking ball at 62-64 with gradual movement.  Changeup sat 67-68, fairly straight pitch, slight sink.  

Matthew Kiszenia, RHP, Lowell HS, 2020: 6-foot, 190 pounds pitches from an over the top slot with quick arm speed.  Arm action is short.  Slow deliberate delivery, downhill shoulders.  Stays in line, lands closed.  Fastball was kept down in the zone and thrown for a strike at 72-75.  Breaking ball has gradual movement and thrown with fastball arm speed but erratic in the zone.  Changeup shows occasional sink at 66-69.  

Will Klein, RHP, Bloomington North HS, 2017: 6-foot-4, 210 pound righty pitches from an over the top slot with arm speed.  Stiff arm action.  Over the head pump delivery, inward turn.  Shows some rhythm.  Good line to the plate, lands square.  Fastball was 84-87, down in the zone but erratic.  Sweeping breaking ball at 70-71.  Changeup was thrown with fastball arm speed at 78-82 showing sink action.  

Ty Lautenschlager, RHP, West Vigo HS, 2017: 6-foot-4, 230 pounds pitches from a long, high ¾ arm action with above average arm speed.  Drop and drive delivery with some effort.  Uphill shoulders, good line to the plate.  Fastball was straight at 79-81.  Breaking ball has an 11/5 shape with gradual movement and thrown for a strike at 66-69.  Changeup has occasional sink at 72 mph.  

Grayson Lynk, RHP, Crown Point HS, 2017: 6-foot-5, 195 pounder pitches from a long, over the top arm action with quick arm speed.  Choppy rhythm in the delivery.  Stays in line, lands square.  Fastball was straight and kept down in the strike zone at 76-80.  Breaking ball has a 12/6 shape with sharp break at 65-67, but struggled to stay on top.  Changeup is thrown with fastball arm speed and straight at 74-75. 

Jake Martin, LHP, Lake Central HS, 2020: 5-foot-10, 150 pounder pitches from a long, high ¾ arm action with average arm speed.  Good balance point.  Some effort and rhythm in the delivery.  Good direction, lands open.  Fastball shows arm side run at 69-71.  Breaking ball has gradual movement at 57-60; slows his arm down.  Changeup was thrown with near fastball arm speed with slight movement at 59-63.  Knuckle ball was 59-61, inconsistent in the zone.  

Luis Munoz, RHP, Seymour HS, 2017: 5-foot-10, 150 pounder pitches from a high ¾ arm slot with average arm speed. Arm action is loose.  Regular effort in the delivery, shoulders are closed.  Stays in the line with his direction, lands closed.  Finishes upright.  Fastball was 73-74.  Breaking ball shows an 11/5 shape at 59-62 but erratic in the zone.  Changeup is thrown with near fastball arm speed, stiff wrist and is straight at 68-70. 

Jake Myers, RHP, Jay County HS, 2017: 5-foot-11, 165 pounds pitches from a high ¾ slot with some arm speed.  Arm action was stiff.  Rushed delivery with effort.  Uphill shoulders, tends to fly open.  Falls off towards 1B.  Fastball was erratic at 79-80.  Breaking ball has a 12/6 shape, left up in the zone.  Slider is thrown on one plane with slight movement at 68-71.  

Jack Phillips, RHP, Cathedral HS, 2017: 6-foot-4, 185 pounds, pitches from a high ¾ slot with quick arm speed.  Loose arm action.  Good balance point.  Quick delivery, slightly rushed.  Stays in line, lands square, athletic finish.  Fastball was 82-84 and thrown for a strike.  Breaking ball shows slight movement at 68-73.  Changeup is thrown with near fastball arm speed, down in the zone at 71-75.  

Austin Pizer, RHP, Highland HS, 2021: 5-foot-6, 120 pounder pitches from a high ¾ arm slot, long arm action.  Shows some effort and some rhythm in the delivery.  Uphill shoulders, flys open.  Stays in line, lands square.  Fastball is thrown for a strike at 64-68.  Breaking ball is thrown with near fastball arm speed at 53-55.  Knuckle ball is thrown with near fastball arm speed, kept it down in the zone at 53-56.  

Jason Reis, RHP, Highland HS, 2020: 5-foot-7, 150 pounder pitches from a high ¾ slot with average arm speed.  Good balance point with some effort in the delivery.  Closed shoulders, lands closed.  Fastball was 64-68.  Breaking ball lacks identity at 57-59.  Works across the body.  

Camden Scheidt, LHP, Highland HS, 2021: 5-foot-10, 140 pound southpaw pitches from a high ¾ slot.  Shows a stab on the back side.  Shows some effort and rhythm in the delivery with uphill shoulders.  Stays in line, landing square.  Fastball was 60-65 with occasional run and thrown for a strike.  Knuckle ball was 48-50.  

Drew Simatovich, RHP, Wheeler HS, 2017: 6-foot-3, 245 pounds pitches from a high ¾ slot, short arm action.  Shows some rhythm, good line to the plate.  Lands square.  Fastball was 74-77.  Breaking ball has an 11/5 shape, gradual movement, down in the zone.  Changeup was 69-71.

Alex Smith, LHP, South Dearborn HS, 2017: 6-foot, 180 pound southpaw pitches from an over-the-top to high ¾ slot.  Lacks arm speed.  Shows some effort in the delivery with uphill shoulders.  Flys open.  Stays in the line.  Fastball was 72-74 while the breaking ball was 62-66.  Drops the arm slot down when throwing the knuckle ball (59-61). 

Carson Smith, RHP, McCutcheon HS, 2017: 6-foot-2, 170 pounds pitches from a high ¾ slot with average arm speed.  Stiff arm action.  Good balance with regular effort in the delivery.  Shows some rhythm with level shoulders.  Stays in line, lands square.  Finishes a little upright.  Fastball was straight at 74-78.  Breaking ball has an 11/5 shape , erratic in the zone at 59-62; slows the arm down.  Changeup kept down in the zone at 69-72.  

Anthony Willis, RHP, Bloomington North HS, 2017: 5-foot-10, 205 pounder pitches from a high ¾ slot with average arm speed.  Stab on the back side.  Regular effort with some rhythm.  Shoulders stay level and stays in the line to the plate.  Lands closed.  Fastball was 72-78.  Breaking ball show an 11/5 shape with sharp action at 65-67.  Changeup is thrown with near fastball arm speed and

Hayden Wynja, LHP, Heritage Christian HS, 2017: 6-foot-6, 170 pound southpaw pitches from a long, high ¾ arm action with quick arm speed.  Good balance point.  Easy effort with smooth rhythm in the delivery.  Stays in line to the plate, lands square, athletic finish.  Fastball was kept down in the zone at 78-80.  Breaking ball is down in the zone at 67-69 but erratic.  Changeup sat 70-73 also down in the strike zone.
