2019 Canada Cup - Day 2 Recap

Nicolas Deschamps C / 3B / Edouard-Montpetit, QC / 2020

Report: Deschamps, a catcher for Team Quebec, came up huge in his club’s first game of the day. He was good behind the plate, received well with the ability to get under pitches and keep strikes in the zone. He kept balls in front of him behind the plate, saving multiple runs from crossing. He’s an enthusiastic, vocal and encouraging catcher as well. He ended the game with a home run over the right-field wall; showing off a power component that would complement his game well. He is an uncommitted catcher who is an interesting follow.

Emilien Pitre SS / Academie Baseball Canada, QC / 2020

Report: We have become accustomed to quality performances from Pitre, and today was no different. He picked up a few hits, spraying a ball the opposite way, and bunting a ball down the third-base line. His bat control is impressive, and it’s clear he could contribute offensively in multiple ways. He made all the plays at shortstop, including an over-the-shoulder catch and having the awareness to react and complete the double play with a throw to first-base. The Kentucky commit is a winning player and an enjoyable watch.

Alberta vs Newfoundland and Labrador

Jackson Clemett OF / LHP / Vauxhall Academy of Baseball, AB / 2021

Report: Clemett, a first-baseman/outfielder for Alberta swung the bat well in today’s game. He hit the ball hard multiple times, but none better than in his second at-bat. He took an inside fastball and pulled it up and over the right-field wall for a home run. It’s a sound left-handed swing that’s fluid through the hitting zone. He has shown the ability to use the whole field at the plate with line-drive contact. He made a few nice catches in the outfield as well, and showed off an accurate throwing arm.

Conor Pote RHP / SS / Okotoks Dawgs Academy, AB / 2022

Report: Pote is a 2022 RHP who will be talked about for years to come. It’s a tall 6-foot-6, 190-pound frame with a downhill, crossfire delivery with deception. He worked 85-87 mph with his fastball early from a 3/4 arm slot with a quick, short arm action. He mixed in a changeup and a pair of curveballs which continue to develop. As he matures and fills out, his body control will improve dramatically and allow him to be more consistent. Pote’s upside is high, and he’s a must watch out of Alberta.

Benjamin Adams LHP / OF / Vauxhall Academy of Baseball, AB / 2020

Report: Adams, the St. Johns commit commanded his fastball all day, working in the 82-84 range while topping out at 85 mph. The arm slot is lower than we last seen Adams, working now from a low-¾ slot, rather than the high ¾ slot we saw last year at Future Games. The curveball had more sweeping action with 1/7 shape, and he does get run on both his changeup and fastball. Adams went 6.1 innings while striking out 8 and being in control all day.

Zach Laurie OF / RHP / Crestwood, ON / 2020

Report: Laurie, another St. Johns commit was 2-3 at the plate, working the opposite as both hits went for extra bases with a double and then was thrown out trying to turn a double into a triple. Laurie also threw out leadoff hitter from Saskatchewan trying to steal second, there is length in Laurie’s arm from the crouch but there is no denying he has arm strength.

Thomas Ireland
Report: Very intriguing arm from Saskatchewan. Ireland didn’t even work one inning, and part of that was the defence behind him. Aside from that and some fastball command issues, Ireland has the makings of a three pitch lefty who sat in the 84-86 range with his fastball. The actions are clean, arm works in the back and gets out front from ¾ slot. Curveball had depth and 1/7 shape with action and proper spin while he did show feel for a changeup. Hope to get another glimpse of Ireland, but the tools play and is a guy schools will want to see more of.

Yohann Desserault
Report: Desserault has been comfortable in the box early on and he jumped a high fastball for a triple into the right-centre gap to blow things open early in the first of the only game under the lights. Hands were short to the ball, and was able to get the head out and find barrel. Atheltic frame with room to add more size, Desserault has many tools to impact the game, as well jump on the mound and throw strikes. Will be a big part of Quebec’s success this week, leader type player who rises to the situation.
