2019 OHSAA Tournament: Division I District Final - No. 2 New Albany vs No. 30 Gahanna Lincoln

Ohio Dominican University: A dull and gloomy day in Columbus, Ohio included a matchup between two top 30 teams in the state met at Ohio Dominican University to battle out the district title, and it came down to the final pitch. The New Albany Eagles (29-1) were victorious over the Gahanna Lincoln Lions (20-8) in a 1-0 thriller. ’20 Miami (OH) commit Mike Sokol got the ball for the Eagles and went the distance for them. Sokol allowed 1 hit, 2 walks, 0 runs, struck out 5, and picked up the win. ’20 Uncommitted Mason Weber received the loss for the Lions despite giving up 4 hits, and only 1 run.

Hits were scarce early, each team having one hit a piece through the fourth inning. Weber found himself in a 1 st and 3 rd jam twice, but was able get out of it without any runs both times. Gahanna’s best chance to score came in the sixth inning when an error in the field and then a costly error on an attempted pickoff gave the Lions a runner on third with nobody out. Sokol locked down for a strikeout before getting a ground ball to third that resulted in a 5-3-2 double play when the runner broke for the plate. The Eagles came up in the bottom of the seventh that started with a leadoff single from ’21 Brock Tibbitts. A steal, a bunt single and an intentional walk loaded up the bases for ’19 Washington & Jefferson Commit Nick Shroyer ended it with an RBI single into left field.

Shroyer had himself a day, the senior had 2 hits for the eagles and was making plays in the field all game. 2020 Cincinnati Commit Alex Steitenberger had the lone hit for the Lions. 2019 Sinclair CC Commit Noah Laurent also had a fantastic day in the field to keep the Lions in the game. In the end, the New Albany Eagles were able to pull it off and are district champions.
