2019 OHSAA Tournament: Division II Regional Semifinal - No. 5 Gilmour Academy vs Poland Seminary

Hudson, Ohio- Game two of the D2 regional semifinals at the Ballpark at Hudson was a matchup between #5 Gilmour Academy Lancers (23-6) and Poland Seminary Bulldogs (20-7). 2021 RHP Penn State commit Ben Demell was the starting pitcher for the Lancers. Demell was as good as advertised, throwing a 80 pitch complete game shutout with 9 K’s, one walk, and picked up the win. 2019 Eastern Gateway commit Braden Olson was the losing pitcher for the Bulldogs, lasting only 2/3 innings while giving up 5 in the first.

It was all Lancers from the very beginning. 2 walks and a single loaded the bases for the Lancers before even recording an out. A Nick Christopher sac fly got his team on the board first. A couple walks with the bases loaded scored 3 more and a RBI single from Ty Plucinsky capped off the 5 run first inning. The scoring would stop until the 4 th inning where the Lancers would score 4 more. The inning was highlighted by a mammoth 2-run homerun from Nick Christopher and a Demell RBI single. The Bulldogs had a chance to get on the board in the 5 th with a runner on second 2020 1B Zach Yaskulla laced a single up the middle but 2020 SS Matt Christopher was able to knock it down in the outfield, pick it up and throw out the runner at home. The Bulldogs would add 2 more in the seventh to cap off their 11-0 victory.

Demell led the way for the Lancers at the plate and on the mound. The righty was 2-4 at the plate while also topping out at 87 mph on the mound. Nick Christopher had a productive day at the plate with his 3 RBI’s. Plucinsky gave the Lancers some help from the nine hole, going 2-2 with 2 walks. Austin Barth was the top hitter for the Bulldogs with two hits. Yaskulla had one hit, Ian Lu had a triple. The Lancers were victorious 11-0 and able to move onto the regional finals.
