2020-2021 Prospect Showcase: Infield Analysis

Shane Bauer, RHP/3B, Brebeuf HS, 2020

60 Time: 7.49, Position Velocity: INF-78, Exit Velocity: 77. 6-foot-1, 160 pound sophomore corner infielder works from wide, compact setup using level line drive approach to middle/pull side. Simple leg lift to start and load, short stride with small dive towards the plate. Over rotates and finishes heavy on back side, lower half partial rotation to collapse to finish. Upper half gets good extension through contact with level to uphill bat path through the baseball. Athletic defender at the corner, plays low and through the baseball with average arm strength across the diamond. Plenty of carry with accuracy to play position. Average glove to field, small stab at the baseball on backhand, clean fluid exchange to get rid.

Max Bergmann, RHP/3B, St. Xavier HS (KY), 2020

60 Time: 7.66, Position Velocity: INF-74, Exit Velocity: 83. 6-foot-1, 145 pound sophomore infielder showed athleticism and length at the plate, driving line drives middle to pull side with average bat speed. Long, loose limbs, works with a fluid load and stride to swing, maintaining balance throughout, small heel spin on front foot to finish. Level bat path with good extension, wiry frame to still fill out and add strength to drive and lift baseball with more pop. Glove works at third base with good range and actions. Plays position with easy actions to field and throw, short to long arm action across the diamond. Hands work soft with fluid exchange, good footwork.

Cam Clark, SS/OF, Cathedral HS, 2020

60 Time: 7.62 , Position Velocity: INF-81, OF-79, Exit Velocity: 68. 5-foot-8, 145 pound sophomore infielder uses aggressive approach from the right side of the plate, using line drive level swing to the pull side. Twitchy, big movements to load with a toe tap to stride, heavy on the front side to swing at contact, small arm bar to enter hitting zone. Feet and finish is inconsistent, often falling towards the plate, lacks ability to hold base and finish through the baseball with extension. Quick first step and instincts in the middle infield, second baseman actions. Showed average arm strength for age across the diamond from tall, OT delivery. More downhill play through the baseball to play with quicker tempo and release.

Kyle Cortner, LHP/1B, Cathedral HS< 2020

60 Time: 8.0, Position Velocity: INF-74,,Exit Velocity: 756-foot-1, 145 pound sophomore left handed hitting first baseman uses short stride and load to swing, long bat path through the hitting zone. Tall, long setup stays balanced throughout, small arm bar to enter the hitting zone. Slightly uphill, line drive approach at the plate, consistent barrels in BP rounds, more length and strength to fill out out swing and frame. Projectable left handed first baseman, feet choppy to field and throw, short stride and arm action from high ¾ slot across the diamond. Delivered accurate throws with below average arm strength. More velocity to gain.

Carter Gallo, 1B/3B, Penn HS, 2021

60 Time: 8.81, Position Velocity: INF-63, Exit Velocity: 75. 5-foot-10, 220 pound freshman corner infielder uses foot drag and tap to load, driving the baseball pull side with average bat speed for age. Big bodied, strong framed hitter uses balanced setup with short load to start swing, no separation from front side. Lower half works stiff, with partial rotation through the swing, hands work in long path around to the pull side, casting away from the body. Level, long path through the hitting zone and short out pull side. Young first baseman has some feel around the bag, glove works to field. More footspeed and lower half needed to generate more arm strength and velo across the diamond. Below average arm strength, with short high ¾ arm action to throw.

Cooper Gean, 2B/SS, John Glenn HS, 2020

60 Time: 7.48, Position Velocity: INF-71, Exit Velocity: 73. 5-foot-6, 128 pound sophomore middle infielder uses an athletic setup and leg kick to flash average bat speed to all fields. Undersized, works high back elbow with good barrel tilt to start swing, weight preset on back side with small load before falling to front side to swing. Average lower half and balance, bat drags on outer half pitch with small dive towards the plate. Aggressive approach at the plate, with long path through extension, at times getting steep through the zone. Flashed some twitch and potential at the plate. Second baseman instincts and glove, more arm strength needed to stay on left side. Short OT arm action across the diamond, fluid footwork and average hands. Showed some athleticism in the field.  

Leo Guida, C/3B, Lafayette Central Catholic HS, 2021

60 Time: 7.93, Position Velocity: INF-77, C-70, Exit Velocity: 75. 5-foot-11, 160 pound right handed hitter uses a balanced setup and swing, producing pull side line drives. Big front foot leg kick to load and stride, heavy weight shift onto front side with front side out early. Bat works long and flat, snapping through the hitting zone, following the front shoulder out. Average lower half in the swing with choppy rhythm. Pull side approach. Raw actions at third base to field, with flat feet to field and hands were stiff. Big OT arm action and delivery, with head snap to throw and recoil. Average arm strength across the diamond from third base. 

Carter Hamlin, C/3B, Homestead HS, 2020

60 Time: 7.97, Position Velocity: INF-73, C-67, Exit Velocity: 85. 5-foot-10, 180 pound sophomore  showcased easy pull side bat speed with athletic setup and balance. Short load and stride to swing, hands bounce before entering the hitting zone and work fast through the hitting zone. Launched a couple baseballs with good angle to the outfield in BP. Lower half is average, more length needed to generate more power in swing, front foot spins on heel. Corner infielder, plays tall to field and throw, big ¾ arm action and delivery across the diamond, spins left to throw. Gets on the side of the baseball and ball travels arm side to first base. Choppy, heavy footwork with average hands to field. 

Sam Klein, RHP/SS, Bloomington North HS, 2020

60 Time: 7.72, Position Velocity: INF-79, Exit Velocity: 84. Lanky, loose, 6-foot-3, 160 pound shortstop works from a tall setup at the plate, raw bat speed and swing. Long limbs with more strength to be added, uses short and simple lift and stride to swing. Hands load to strong position, easy bat speed and effort to swing with upper half. Lower half is stiff, partial rotation through swing. Pull side approach, long level extension through the swing. Loose, athletic instincts in the field, with average fluid footwork to throw. Fields baseball with one hand, sure hands to field. Plays well through the baseball with athletic actions to throw, easy arm strength, more to be developed in next two years.

Zach Lewis, 2B, Chatard HS, 2020

60 Time: 8.13, Position Velocity: INF-69, Exit Velocity: 68. 5-foot-8, 145 pound sophomore second baseman uses wide and balanced setup from the left side to produce short, level stroke to all fields. Small hand rock off the back shoulder to start swing, short stride to separate, hands work short to enter the zone, long bat path through with below average bat speed. Average lower half in swing, maintains balance throughout. Undersized second baseman with average range and footwork through the baseball. Plays tall and bends at waist to field, average hands with clean exchange. Below average arm strength and carry. More strength and size to gain.

Brennan Morehead, RHP/SS, Alexandria HS, 2020

60 Time: 7.58, Position Velocity: INF-75, Exit Velocity: 74. 5-foot-10, 160 pound sophomore middle infielder showed pull side approach from the right side, level line drive hook swing. Back foot starts open to catcher, causing front side inward turn and front foot to dive and land close to plate, bat and upper body work out and around front hip, causing pull side hook swing. Front foot lands on heel and spins through contact, lower half works tall and stiff through swing. Inconsistent balance to finish, more bat speed to generate with better direction in lower half. Average instincts in the field, stays square side to side to field baseball. Hands are average with quick and clean exchange. Fields baseball deep at times, with short arm action, showed ability to pick it with soft glove on back hand. Below average arm strength across the diamond, delivered accurate throws.

Kaid Muth, C/3B, Fishers HS, 2020

60 Time: 7.24, Position Velocity: INF-79, C-74, Exit Velocity: 85. 6-foot, 155 pound sophomore  showed athletic and fluid swing from the right side, generating easy bat speed and pop to the pull side. Tall and open setup, good rhythm and load, creates good separation and stretch, front foot lands athletic, slightly open to allow lower half to work with good extension through contact. Slight over rotate to finish. More lift and strength and generate in lower half. Athletic glove and actions at third base, feet work quick and fluid. Exchange is clean with average soft hands. Short, high ¾ arm action across the diamond with average arm strength and carry. 

Cooper Noel, SS/OF, Monrovia HS, 2020

60 Time: 7.27, Position Velocity: INF-78,OF-83, Exit Velocity: 81. 5-foot-8, 150 pound sophomore middle infielder uses aggressive, max effort approach from the left side, flashing athleticism and quick barre turn in swing. Tall and narrow to start, with smooth load and stride to wide base, lower half is athletic and active, weight shift and head movement to swing. Long, level bat path through the hitting zone, looks to pull the baseball. Average bat speed. 

Joshua Pyne, SS/RHP, Linton Stockton HS, 2021

60 Time: 7.15, Position Velocity: INF-81, Exit Velocity: 83. 5-foot-10, 160 pound freshman shortstop showed hit tool with some power, driving three homeruns out in BP to pull side, showing good angle and bat speed from the right side. Advanced hitter for age with high ceiling, uses athletic and balanced setup with good rhythm and easy actions. Lower half stays connected and strong throughout, using a leg kick to separate and stride, bat works at good angle up and out of the hitting zone to lift. Good extension out front with pull side power. Athletic, plus defender at shortstop, good instincts and feel for position. Average arm strength across the diamond with good footwork. Young projectable two way prospect.

Dalton Rennaker, 1B/RHP, Benton Central HS, 2021

60 Time: 9.47, Position Velocity: INF-72, Exit Velocity: 78. 5-foot-10, 220 pound freshman first baseman works from tall, open setup from the right side, pull side approach. 1 piece swing with leg lift to close, lower half is slow and stiff, no separation or load to swing. Barrel works in long path through the hitting zone, level line drive swing. Below average bat speed, more explosiveness and hand speed to be developed. Stocky framed corner infielder with long arm action across the diamond. Glove works to field with good first step and direction off the bag, has more foot speed and momentum to create to throw/field. Below average arm strength with average carry.

Logan Wagner, 2B/SS, Marion HS, 2020

60 Time: 7.71, Position Velocity: INF-70, Exit Velocity: 78. 5-foot-11, 175 pound sophomore shortstop hits with tall open setup from the right side, landing slightly closed to hit with middle of the field approach. Late at times, front foot late to get down, small dive towards the plate with weight still shifting forward and shoulders collapsing to contact. Strong frame with average, level bat speed. Average lower half with some stiffness. Head changes planes in load to contact. Good size defender, stands tall to throw with long arm action and delivery. Plays low to the ground, good instincts with some stiff actions, feet get flat to the backhand side. More foot speed and arm strength to be developed.

Coleson White, 3B/1B, Shenandoah HS, 2020

60 Time: 8.48, Position Velocity: INF-71, Exit Velocity: 77. 5-foot-8, 210 pound sophomore corner infielder uses strong stocky frame and setup to drive balls pull side with average bat speed. Heavy leg lift to start swing and load, weight heavy on back side, front foot lands slightly closed, blocking off lower half to work through swing. More length to add in stride and swing, too narrow currently at contact. Strong bottom hand pull through hitting, bat long and flat through the hitting zone. Corner infielder with average hands to field, footwork heavy with flat feet to field at times, short ¾ arm action across the diamond. Fields deep to center of body, clean exchange to get rid of baseball. More speed/range to stay on left side of infield at next level.

Nick Williams, 1B/RHP, Alexandria HS, 2020

60 Time: 8.23, Position Velocity: INF-72, Exit Velocity: 85. Big bodied, 6-foot-5, 230 pound sophomore first baseman generates easy pull side bat speed and pop with more in the tank. Tall, slightly open setup to start swing with simple hand push and stride to separate. Lower half is tall and stiff in swing, much more to generate. Spins on heel through contact. Back elbow and hands work well to the baseball, with good extension through the hitting zone, spins off at times with front side out early. Power potential in the future, lower half refined. Good skill set at first base with good direction and glove off the bag. Big target to throw to, can pick it off the backhand with momentum to throw to second. Below average arm strength across the diamond, more to be added to large frame.
