2022 Spring Team Preview: Pickerton Academy

DERRY, N.H. - It was a disappointing finish to an outstanding season for Pinkerton Academy last season. A two-out, two-run home run in the bottom of the seventh inning by the Londonderry eight-hole hitter ended the Pinkerton campaign in the Division I quarterfinals.

That only adds to the drive to make another strong tournament run in 2022, something head coach Steve Campo has done four times since taking over the program back in 2013.

“We’re very excited about the pitching staff this year,” pointed out Campo, whose 2014 team finished as state runners-up. “We return our top four arms.”

New Hampshire Co-Pitcher of the Year Liam Doyle is back as the staff ace after throwing 51.1 innings last season, striking out 101 with a 0.51 ERA. The 35th-ranked senior left-handed pitcher in the country is a Coastal Carolina commit.

But the deep staff does not stop there. Tom Rioux, the 40th-ranked senior right-handed pitcher in New England and the losing pitcher in last year’s quarterfinals, returns after earning first-team All-State honors as a junior. The Colby College signee had a 0.87 ERA, fanning 41 in 47.1 innings.

Number three hurler Max Lukeman, a senior committed to Husson College, is back after tossing 18 innings with 18 strikeouts and a 0.778 ERA. Jake Cooper brings another experienced pitcher back to a team that was 16-2 a year ago after throwing eight innings with a 1.75 ERA as a junior.

Additional help on the mound will come from freshman Leo Boucher, a right-hander throwing 85.

“We have a lot of competition with kids that want to compete,” Campo noted. “They attack the zone and trust their defense. These are guys with swing-and-miss stuff.”

Cole Yennaco, the 22nd-ranked 2023 catcher in New England, is also back for the Astros after earning second-team All-State recognition a year ago. The Merrimack commit hit .361 with 16 RBIs last season.

Two more juniors, Jacob Albert and Lorenzo Corsetto, bring more experience to the Pinkerton lineup. Albert, the 22nd-rated 2023 outfielder in New England, hit .371 with 15 RBIs and 23 runs scored and is back in the two-hole while Corsetto, a middle infielder, averaged .382.

“These kids are hitters,” Campo said of the two-sport athletes, Yennaco and Albert football players and Corsetto a hockey player.

Rioux batted .375 and will play third base in addition to pitch while fellow senior Reilly Beaulieu, an infielder, returns after hatting. 324 before a broken wrist in early May brought an end to his junior season.

“I really like our experience, especially on the mound,” Campo related. “Our pitching staff is ready to go. We have four guys that know how to pitch and want to pitch in the big game.”

One area of concern stands out to Campo about the 2022 Astros.

“We have got to be able to figure out how to get the big hit to get that big run across,” Campo said. “The key to the season will come down to timely hitting.”

League play will be as strong as ever with Winnacunnet, Exeter, Londonderry and Bedford expected to be near the top with Pinkerton Academy. Additionally, Maine state champion South Portland has been added to the schedule and will be the opponent in the second game of the season on April 13.
