Prep Baseball Report

3 for '23 - Cannon, Gabel, Hertzog

Dan Jurik
Scouting Director - Pacific Northwest

Earlier this Fall we had the chance to gather a strong group of uncommitted '22 and '23 prospects from WA and OR to compete against each other down at Goss Stadium on the campus of Oregon State University. The day kicked off with an indoor workout and then concluded with a controlled scrimmage.

PBR events events such as this provide players with the opportunity to build their profile with the most up-to-date information and video footage. All players in attendance receive an online profile with their verified statistics, player report, picture and video. Additionally, all subsequent stories written about a prospect will be linked to the player’s profile, ultimately creating a one-stop shop for recruiters.

Showcases help identify which prospects have asserted themselves towards the top of their class as well as who might be one of the next youngsters to emerge onto the scene. They also serve as potential identifiers for invite-only events such as our Future GamesJunior Future Games and West Coast Games

Here are notes on 3 standouts from the 2023 class to keep an eye on heading into the 2022 season

3 for '23

uncommitted spotlight

JD Cannon 2B / RHP / Tigard , OR / 2023

Lean, twitchy athlete with wiry strength throughout frame at 5-foot-7, 140. Solid runner who gets going quickly. Balanced, square set up in the box with alignment towards pitcher. Shows some bend in lower half and slight hip hinge. Hands stay near back shoulder and keep barrel in a relaxed position. Short, subtle hand load that syncs up with forward stride. Stays centered during forward move and gets easy rotation through his core. Quickness in the hands. Middle of the field approach. Defensively, starts wide with a slight hop in his pre-pitch routine. Quick first stop with short, choppy footwork as he moves through the ball. Gets direction going towards target as he separates and gets into his arm action. ¾ release with ability to alter slot on double play feeds. On the mound, pitches with confidence and throws his entire arsenal with conviction. Works exclusively out of the stretch, maintaining direction towards his target. Coils into back hip at leg lift and rides his backside into forward stride and landing. Everything stays tight/compact and allows him to rotate easily. Short, bent arm action with ¾ release. Ball shows exceptional carry into the zone on his FB. Flashes aptitude for spin and can shape 2 distinct breaking balls. Shoulder line stays level throughout with a tall, upright finish after release

Drake Gabel LHP / OF / West Linn, OR / 2023

6-foot-1, 190 pounds with a strong frame throughout and wide upper half. Gabel missed some time throughout the summer with a minor injury but looks completely healthy now and put together a strong performance to round out the Fall season. Offensively, sets up in a narrow, square stance with hands set high above rear shoulder. Uses a toe-tap load to get into a wider hitting base, allowing lower half to drift into contact as hands lower & get barrel on plane. Uphill finish after contact with consistent loft to his pull-side. Strong hands at impact. Defensively profiles well to OF with his L/L skillset. Short, choppy footwork when working towards the ball. Funnels ball in from his glove side with a quick transition into throwing motion. Momentum stays behind the throw as he releases from a high ¾ slot with compact arm action. On the mound, showed impressive progress with his overall command and FB velocity. Peaked at 85 with working in the 82-84 range with sustainable, starter effort. Simple delivery with steady tempo and clean direction towards target. Smooth, continuous arm path with high ¾ release. Aggressive hand speed out front with the ability to stay balanced and allow backside to come thru after release. CB showed tight shape with bend into the zone and CH has chance to work very well off of  his FB. One of the top remaining 2-way prospects in the class heading into the 2022 season

Isaac Hertzog SS / 2B / Tigard, OR / 2023

Wiry athlete with a lean frame at 5-foot-9, 160 pounds. Athletic runner. Moves well underway. At the plate, hits from a simple, balanced stance with consistent tempo/rhythm to his actions. Starts tall with hands slightly away from body, maintaining subtle movement. Hands shift back during low forward stride and level out at shoulder height. Barrel gets exceptional coverage of the zone & consistency stays on plane with the ball. Understands how to work the middle of the field with a knack for line-drive contact. Defensively, moves easily on the dirt & has the tools to stick in the INF long-term. Light, crisp footwork. Maintains glove control while moving laterally. Quick, easy exchange on the funnel into throwing motion. Tight, bent arm action with high ¾ release. Understands the speed of the game and attacks the ball accordingly.
