6A State Championship Game

Mater Academy vs. Winter Haven

Mater Academy (22-8) made Dade county baseball history Thursday night. Prior to Thursday’s 6A state championship game, South Dade, American, and Brito Miami all won state championships in their respected classes. With a win against Winter Haven (25-5), Mater Academy became the fourth Dade county school to win a state championship this year. The first time that 4 schools from Dade County have won a state championship in the same year.

The win came by an outstanding pitching performance by Kevin Fuentes. The Junior RHP threw a 1 hit shutout, walking 1 and striking out 4. The game’s lone run came in the first inning when Mater Academy’s Raul Frias scored on a misplayed drive to left field off the bat of Daniel Reyes (Florida). That run would be all that Fuentes would need to give Mater Academy the 6A crown.

The play of the game came in the 6th inning when Lazaro Rodriquez, Mater Academy’s third basemen made an over the shoulder catch while falling down. Rodriquez makes the catch, and cuts down Winter Haven’s Trent Gantt, attempting to score the game tying run. The only hit given up by Fuentes came in the 5thinning off the bat of Winter Haven’s Tobias Myers.

Winter Haven pitcher, Kevin Wolf kept the Blue Devils in the game as he went 6 innings, giving up 1 unearned run, 3 hits 3 walks, and striking out 2. His great performance wasn’t enough however as Mater Academy defeated Winter Haven 1-0 to win this year’s 6A state championship.
