The IHSAA baseball season is in full swing and our staff has been crisscrossing the state covering numerous teams and players.  You can find many of those in our SCOUT BLOG

Today, we are looking at some of the unsigned seniors we've seen thus far.

Trent Johnson, INF/RHP, Crawfordsville HS, 2017

The 2016 IHSAA strikeout leader came in for relief for the Athenians.  Johnson featured a straight fastball that sat 83-85 with feel for both side of the plate.  He also showcased a hard, sharp breaking ball that sat 74-76.  Breaking ball drew several swing and misses.  Defensively, hands are sure with clean footwork.  Throws have carry across the field.  At the plate, Johnson is slightly closed with a compact swing.  Above average bat speed and good box presence.

Trent Johnson 3.27.17

Trevor George, RHP, Guerin Catholic HS, 2017
6-foot-2, 205 pound unsigned senior pitched four innings of no-hit baseball in relief.  In his first inning the fastball sat 83-84, touching 85 before settling in at 80-82 in the last coupe of innings.  His best pitch was his 72-74 curveball that showed lots of depth and consistently was thrown for a strike, getting swings and misses.  He finished his night striking out six and walking three. Hook/wrap on the backside of the arm action.

Trevor George 3.27.17

Dalton Hutchinson, 2B, Hamilton Southeastern HS, 2017 3.29.17

5-foot-10 170 pound unsigned senior has quick hands and a strong arm at second base for the Royals.  Footwork is fluid.  Hutchinson has a balanced setup at the plate with small leg kick.  Path is long with above average bat speed.  He went 2-2 with two hard hit singles and a RBI.

Shaine Mitchell, OF, Brebeuf HS, 2017 3.29.17

5-foot-7 160 pound switch-hitting outfielder presents a balanced setup a direct bat path.  Produces line drives.  Fast foot speed.  In the outfield, actions are athletic with a loose 3/4 arm action.  Threw out a runner trying to tag up to third but the ball was mishandled on the tag.  Mitchell also went 1-2 with a walk and a stolen base.

Jett McGowan, C, Brebeuf HS, 2017 3.29.17

6-foot 205 pound unsigned senior catcher displayed pop times between 2.02-2.06 on Wednesday night.  Arm is quick, strong.  Showcased ability to throw behind runners including a back pick to first base for an out.  Hands are hard with improvement needed on receiving.  Has the athleticism.  At the plate, setup is balanced with a back hand load and slight leg kick used as a timing trigger.  Produced hard contact twice against quality arms.  Bat speed is fast with ability to get into both gaps.  Finished the day with two hits and an RBI.

Ben Tharp, 3B, Lafayette Central Catholic HS, 2017 4.7.17

Lanky frame. Balanced setup with a long, uphill path to the ball.  Above average bat speed.  Good barrel awareness.  Hit a line drive 2-run home run over the left field fence on an 83mph fastball.  Uncommitted.

Trevor Newman, OF, Fishers HS, 2017

Uncommitted senior outfielder has a compact swing with above average bat speed from the right side.  Quick foot speed and an advanced base runner.  Above average arm strength in the outfield.  Had a 2RBI double in game two of the double header.

Trevor Newman 4.8.17

Caleb Brenczewski, 3B, Fishers HS, 2017 4.8.17

Athletic setup in the box with back load and slight leg kick.  Slightly uphill bat path with above average bat speed.  Swagger in the box.  Produced hard contact multiple times including a home run.  Defensively, hands are sure with above average arm strength.  Plays through the ball.   Uncommitted.

Jack Myers, RHP, Cathedral HS, 2017

Uncommitted class of 2017 right-handed pitcher. Projectable 6-foot-7, 190-pound frame. Two-sport athlete that also plays basketball for the Irish. Aggressive delivery, three-quarters slot, works downhill. Above average body control for such a tall high school-aged pitcher, works across his body some. Fastball 82-84 mph, touched 85 in the first inning. Threw high percentage of fastballs working both sides of the plate. Breaking ball with 11/5 shape, 72-73 mph. Feel for change-up, 75-76 mph, used versus both right-handed and left-handed hitters effectively. Competed well in a very offensive environment with the wind blowing straight out at 25-30 mph, tossing a six-inning complete game shutout in Cathedral’s 10-0 win. 6-foot-7 class of 2017 right-hander that knows how to compete. Recently back on the market after committing to St. Joseph’s (IN) before the school announced it is closing.
