5A DISTRICT 5 PLAYOFF SUMMARY

GAME 1

Regis vs Westminster

Game one at Regis who was hosting the district 5 site belonged to two Regis baseball players, Brent Schwarz and Quinn Cotton. Brent Schwarz (Rice Commit) took a minute to find his stuff but when he found it he was near untouchable. Sitting between 83-86 all day touching 87 and there was not much need to show anything else. He showed great command touching the black on both sides of the plate and gave opposing players minimal chance at success. Schwarz fanned 15 Westminster hitters in a complete game 2 hit shutout for the Regis Jesuit Raiders.

While Schwarz did his part on the mound Kody Riebschlager did a good job on the mound for Westminster. Touching 80-81 Riebschlager sat in the upper 70’s and it took some fatigue to set in for the Raiders to get to him. After getting through the Regis order 2 times Riebschlager walked 9 hole hitter Zach Woodruff (Garden City CC) and Quin Cotton promptly drove a ball of the right field wall to put Regis up 2. The following inning Justin Thaxton turned on a ball made it a 3-0 game with a solo bomb.

Although Westminster was able to keep the Regis offense at bay most of the game the Raiders made the game theirs with dominant pitching and timely hitting.

Final Score: Regis Jesuit 3 Westminster 0

GAME 2

Ralston Valley vs Castle View

The second game slated for the day featured a well stocked pitching staff in Ralston Valley and a scrappy team in Castle View. On the mound for Ralston Valley was Daniel Jurney (Arkansas State) who was 83-86 touching 87 all day long. Jurney appeared to have a cutter working at about 81/82 and he was mixing in a curveball at around 73/74. Jurney had the Castle View hitters in flux through their first 15 at bats. Then in top of the fifth the Sabercat offense woke up for 7 runs facing 4 Mustang pitchers. Coach Freehling finally gave in and entered Jordan Holloway (University of Nebraska Omaha) but it was too late. Holloway was sitting 88-92 pumping it up to 94 at times. Again good change of speed on the curveball/slider at 76-78. The damage had already been done though and Castle View hitters had what they needed.

On the Castle View side of things they had a great performance from Ben Dalke who went the distance. Dalke lead the Sabercats to a complete game working in almost all of his out on ground balls and fly balls. Dalke was touching 85/86 early on ending the game in the low 80’s. He showed good change of pace with a curveball in the low 70’s and a cutter in the upper 70’s. Even when Ralston Valley threatened in the 6th and 7th innings Dalke managed ground balls and a double play ball to get out of it.

Offensively Castle View had consistent base hits throughout their lineup with a game changing go ahead home run from Jr. Zach Broussely.

Final Score: Castle View 8 Ralston Valley 2

GAME 3

Regis vs Castle View

The District 5 Championship pitted Continental League foes Regis Jesuit and Castle View for the right to play in the final 8. On the mound for Regis was David Peterson (Oregon) in his first start of the season after coming off an early season injury. For Castle View it was Tyler Eickstadt showing an ability to overcome some early game struggles.

Peterson had the scouts out in full force in this game. Early in the first 2 innings he was bringing the fastball 86-88 but settled in around the low to mid 80’s during the rest of his performance. Working off some of the rust Peterson had little trouble working through the Sabercat line up chalking up 7 strike outs.

Of the 4 early runs for Regis 3 of them found their way on base via walk. But yet again Regis had a familiar face put the go ahead run across the plate late with a deep sac fly from Quinn Cotton.

Castle View’s Tyler Eickstadt struggled to find his fastball all day but managed to use his off speed, specifically his curveball, to hold a powerful Regis line up back. Throwing his fastball in the low 80’s and a curveball 68-71 Eickstadt did his job giving the Sabercats an opportunity to knock off the Raiders.

Castleview had little going until the 6th inning when they tied the game at 4 with 2 singles and then a bit of help from the Regis pitching staff with 3 walks and a hit batter. Inevitably it was not enough and the Raider as stated came back and won.

Final Score: Regis Jesuit 5 Castle View 4
