Arkansas Insider: Unsigned Seniors

By: Zac Bottoms
Arkansas Scouting Director

This week in the Arkansas Insider, I take a look at the top unsigned seniors according to our rankings.

Drew Young, RHP/OF Bentonville HS
Young is a 6-foot-1 205-pound RHP with a physical build and large frame. He pounds the bottom half of the strike zone with his 86-89 mph with slight run. He flashes a curveball with 11/5 break and late action 70-73 mph, but uses his fastball command for most of his success. Overall Young has good arm strength and repeatable delivery, he is an advanced high school pitcher who should get better overtime

Carter Brown, RHP, Bentonville HS
Brown is a 6-foot-1 190 pound right hander with a large-frame and average build. He worked from an H ¾ arm slot with a quick clean arm. He repeated his mechanics with some effort. He commanded the strike zone with 3 pitches. He threw his fastball 84-86 with slight sink. His curveball was thrown 70-71 mph with gradual break, but was thrown for strikes. He commanded the change up, throwing the pitch with near fastball arm speed and arm side run at 73-76 mph. Overall Brown has a strong arm with a feel to pitch, in his defensive work he registered a 90 mph throwing from the outfield. I believe with some mechanically fixes he will throw harder, and be a solid pitcher at the collegiate level.

Joey Savin, LHP, Fayetteville HS
Savin is a 5-10 170-pound  LHP with an average frame and an athletic build. He throws from a 3/4 arm slot with a clean quick arm. He tends to get rotational and shows to be an east west slinger at times. If he stays closed he does a good job creating leverage and commanding the strike zone on a consistent bases. His fastball works 82-84 mph with arm-side run. He throws a slider with depth and 1/7 action at 70-72 mph. Moving forward Savin projects to get better with his frame and clean arm action. Adding strength will help greatly.

Drew Dyer, LHP, Benton HS
Dyer is a 5-foot-11 200-pound left-hander with a large frame and a physical build. He commands the strike zone with a fastball of 83-86 mph and will touch an 88 mph every once in a while. He has a short quick arm action from a ¾ arm slot. He has a feel for the breaking ball but nothing on a consistent basis. He repeats his mechanics and does a sound job staying balanced throughout his delivery. Overall a physical player with arm strength as he continues to pitch his secondary pitches should improve.

Ryan Czanstowski, RHP, Mountain Home HS
Czanstkowski is a 6-foot-1 180-pound right-hander with a large frame and an athletic build. He works from a H3/4 arm slot with a quick loose arm. His fastball was 83-86 mph with slight arm-side run. He located a 11/5 curveball with early break for strikes thrown at 69-72 mph. He pitched 3 innings allowing 1 run on 1 hit while striking out 3. His frame will hold more weight and his athleticism says he will throw harder as he continues to develop. He repeats his mechanics which should allow him to throw strikes consistently as he continues to mature.
