BC Selects Camp Recap - Day 3

Concluding a long 3-day camp, the Team BC hopefuls went through on-field BP then jumped into another 12-inning game at Langley’s McLeod Stadium. Today saw more offense, as the hitters got into rhythm and saw a bevy of younger (2021) graduates.

Position Player Highlights:

Williams Camacho Soto Coquitlam Reds- 3B/UTIL- (2020)- R/R
Report: Soto is about as explosive as they come. A strong athlete who runs well (6.7 60-yard), Soto is well fit at any position although with good speed and above average arm strength, outfield may be his best fit. Soto has a selective eye at the plate, which compliments his speed well. He showed flashes of impressive bat-speed and ability to catch up to upper 80s pitching.

Luciano Letteri Coquitlam Reds- SS/2B- (2020)- R/R
Report: Letteri has plus speed (6.7 60-yard) and a nice gap-to-gap approach. Uses the middle of the field well and does not strike out often. Defensively, Letteri moves around the infield well, but his arm strength plays better from 2B. As he grows and develops, SS is not out of reach. With his speed, OF is also a future possibility.

Jake Vrlak North Shore Jr. Twins- C/OF- (2021)- R/R
Report: Vrlak showed an impressive demeaner behind the plate for his age. Needs work on blocking, but his mannerisms and actions show leadership qualities and the ability to manage a pitching staff. POP time of about 2.05-2.15, he has room to grow, and with cleaned up mechanics and a faster release 2.00 is not out of reach. With only being in Grade 10, he should look towards building strength in the weight room.

Yosuke Fujie Fraser Valley Cardinals- SS/2B (2020)- S/R
Report: Fujie’s defensive abilities continued to impress coaches. He moves around extremely well, and has a nice quick and accurate release across the diamond. Offensively, he uses his speed and plays small-ball well. Swing looks good from both sides of the plate, needs some strength to become an impact player at the dish. Does not strike out often.

Nicholas Fry UBC Thunder- OF/P (2020)- R/R
Report: In only his third year of high-level competitive baseball, Fry’s approach at the plate is impressive. He has a short swing and lets the ball travel. Fry one-hopped the right-centre wall in his last at-bat of the camp, and earlier in the day battled some well-located fastballs in an 0-2 count before skying a hanging breaking ball to left field. Defensively, he needs work on his routes and closing speed. Arm strength plays out of either corner OF spot.

Matthew Suarez UBC Thunder- C/3B (2020)- R/R
Report: Suarez appeared to be the most polished defensive catcher at the camp. He receives the ball well low in the zone and is a very wide target for the pitching staff. Blocks well to both sides and smothers the ball in front of him. POP times stayed consistent between 2.02-2.10.
