Canadian Spring Training All Tourney Team

The cast of talent in Orlando for Spring Training was enormous with deep depth seen at nearly every position. The six Ontario organizations’ players were ready to perform and did so all week long. The All-Tournament Team for Spring Training includes the 11 position players and 6 pitchers who stood out above the rest. It was a tremendous week and to recap here were the most terrific performances with our MVP rounding off the list.

Catchers

Sam Mitcham C / OF / Sinclair, ON / 2020

Report: Mitcham was stellar for the Toronto Mets all week long in Sanford, Florida. The 6-foot-1, 158-pound catcher, displayed his tools at the plate and behind it, being named the Player of the Day on Tuesday. Mitcham’s approach at the plate is simple, from the right side he starts with his hands low, before loading them back to create separation and coming forward with a flat plane. He uses the middle of the field, hitting the ball where it’s pitched. On Scout Day, Mitcham recorded a 2.09 pop-time, as well as throwing it down to second up to 74 mph. Mitcham is an uncommitted 2020 who started his Junior season with a bang at Boombah.

Justin Jang C / 3B / Abbey Park, ON / 2021

Report: Jang was one of the pleasant surprises of the week, as he went on a tear offensively while maintaining his steady game defensively. Jang was a guarantee for a hit in the boxscore it seemed like every game, he had constant quality at-bats, and when he got a pitch to hit, he used his bat-to-ball ability to lend him a trip to first. With added strength, more power should come, but his current skills pose for a good future in the batter's box. With the top pop-time behind the plate of 1.96, and the strongest throwing arm of 77 mph, Jang’s ability behind the plate allow him to be a contributor, and with his hitting ability, he is a must watch in the 2019 season.

Infielders

Joshua Anderson SS / 2B / Ajax, ON / 2018

Report: Anderson was one of the elite players during Spring Training, leaving the weekend having turned heads of anyone in attendance. The right-handed hitting shortstop showed rhythm and timing at the plate allowing him to square up anything that was thrown his way. He displayed power, recording multiple extra-base hits, as well as showing the ability to shorten up and hit hard line-drive singles. The actions in the infield were controlled and fluid, allowing for no concerns about his ability to man his position. His body movements, glove actions and positioning allow him to make all the routine plays before letting off throws up to 83 mph. The 2019 grad shouldn't be available for long after his weekend in paradise.

Bryce Arnold SS / 2B / Blessed Trinity, ON / 2020

Report: Arnold, the top-rated position player in our 2020 class, put together a spectacular week in Florida. On Scout Day, Arnold ran the top 60-yard dash at 6.75, had the best infield arm strength at 87 mph, and third highest exit velocity of 95 mph. His Scout Day performance translated to in-game where he hit for average and slugged all week long while playing solid defence and running well. With bat-speed and quickness throughout, Arnold will hit at the next level. He will be a premier watch during the course of the summer for the Fieldhouse Pirates.

Jacob Douglas C / 1B / St.Marys, ON / 2019

Report: Douglas, a 5-foot-11, 180-pound infielder was the story of the week at Spring Training. Douglas displayed impressive power and did so consistently, taking advantage of anything hittable. On day two, Douglas hit the first and only home run by a Canadian player, sending a pitch over the fence by a mile. He later followed up with a loud double in the gap, one of many. Douglas’ improved athleticism was evident as he ran a 7.02 60 yard dash, and with strength which led to a 95 mph exit velocity, Douglas is an uncommitted bat to watch closely.

Nicholas Styles 3B / OF / Stayner Collegiate Institute, ON / 2019

Report: Styles, a 6-foot, 165-pound infielder was solid all week long, deservingly earning a spot on the all-tourney team. His great week was wrapped up with an outstanding Day 5 which included a single, double, and triple, showing his ability to work line-to-line and use his speed which has been up to 7.00. On Scout Day, Styles recorded the third best outfield throwing velocity of 87 mph, while also topping out at 84 mph off the tee. The uncommitted outfielder was named our senior steal during the week, and it shouldn't be long before the Nationals product finds a home.

Outfielders

Tanner Almond OF / LHP / Georgian Bay Community School, ON / 2021

Report: Left on left 2021 outfielder from the Nationals, Almond was a standout and an easy choice to be an All-Tourney member. He impressed from the start of the week, putting together a couple of solid rounds of batting practice, displaying a controlled, upward swing. The swing translated in-game where he got on plane early and was able to get out front and drive the baseball. It’s an athletic and projectable build, and with added strength, his 82 mph arm strength along with power will take big jumps. As Almond heads into only his sophomore season, he has lots of time to continue developing an already impressive toolset.

Kenny Di Clemente OF / 3B / St. Thomas aquinas, ON / 2019

Report: 2019 Di Clemente of the Fieldhouse Pirates was swinging it all week, and on Day 5 he had his breakout performance driving in four runs while also contributing on the bases and in the field. The Crowder commit’s ability to use the whole field while displaying some power showed as he recorded many extra-base hits over the course of the week. On scout day, he ran a sub-7.00 60 yard dash, while throwing it up to 87 mph from the outfield, and driving the ball up to 88 mph off the tee. Di Clemente has the ability to contribute on all ends when he heads off to college and his toolset was on full display in Orlando.

Cameron Lugtenburg OF / RHP / St. Stephens Catholic School, ON / 2020

Report: 2020 Uncommitted Cameron Lugtenburg of the Ontario Yankees was yet another Yankee bat to breakout over the week. The left-handed hitter leans back in the box, before coming towards the ball with an upward bat path. He showed the ability to put bat-on-ball, driving through and finishing aggressively two-handed. Lugtenburg’s stroke is to left-field as he stays closed and short to the baseball. Lugtenburg has shown the ability to hit in the past, and it was no different to start off the 2019 season.

Tyrese Bentola OF / RHP / Centennial, ON / 2021

Report: Bentola, a Tri-City Giants product more than held his own against many top arms in Orlando. Bentola showed the ability to catch up to fastball’s recording his fair share of base-hits including a triple in one of his last games of the week. He made multiple highlight-reel plays in the outfield, ranging both in and to his right to make diving grabs. He has been up to 78 mph from the outfield as well, showing the ability to catch and throw with 7.72 speed. He’s just a 2021 prospect and continues to make noise every time he steps onto a field, and we look forward to watching him during the summer.

Owen Ellis OF / SS / TA Blakelock, ON / 2021

Report: 2021 uncommitted Owen Ellis of the Fieldhouse Pirates is a two-way player who broke out at the Boombah Sports Complex. Ellis was a reliable run-producer for the Pirates, coming up huge in critical spots as soon as the tournament started as he drove in two runs to start off one of the first games of the week. He’s always solid in the outfield, and on Scout Day he was up to 80 mph while also running a 7.11 60 yard dash. His under controlled but powerful swing allows him to be a consistent bat a club can rely on during a season. Ellis is currently the 19th ranked player in our 2021 class and 4th ranked outfielder.

Pitchers

Steven Hospital RHP / OF / Holy Trinity, ON / 2019

Report: 2019 Niagara commit Steven Hospital was dominant on the mound to start off the summer. Hospital was our Day 1 Pitcher of the Day, in two innings, he sat 84-86 mph with an improved slider which displayed tilt. Hospital was able to locate glove side, as well as arm-side allowing him to have success against a strong club. The 6-foot-5, 180-pound right-hander is long-limbed with an athletic, projectable frame and we look forward to watching him during the summer.

Drew Howard RHP / SS / All Saints, ON / 2020

Report: 2020 uncommitted RHP Drew Howard was lights out in his first appearance on Day 3, sitting 86-88 mph and being named the pitcher of the day. Howard came right after hitters, getting on top and working freely to both sides of the plate. He mixed in one of the best off-speed offerings we saw all week, a hard downer curveball which buckled right-handed hitters. He is an aggressive arm who is fearless on the bump and with his ability to throws strikes has a chance to go deep in games as well as short stints. Howard is the #2 rated RHP in our 2020 class and can keep climbing from his #9 overall ranking.

Nick LOSTRACCO RHP / St. James, ON / 2019

Report: 2019 uncommitted RHP Nick Lostracco threw in multiple games and showed really well, earning a spot on the all-tourney team. He was best in his final appearance on Day 5, sitting 83-84 mph while topping out at 86 mph. His arm works comfortably from a high ¾ arm slot while landing in-line and following through aggressively allowing him to create extension. Lostracco mixed in some slow-breaking curveball which had depth as well. The Ontario Nationals arm was a clear top arm throughout the week.

Tyler Coakley RHP / OF / Dr. Frank J Hayden, ON / 2020

Report: 2020 RHP Tyler Coakley has made significant improvements in the new year, and in his first appearance in Orlando it was clear. The righty is now up to 85 mph off the bump, getting downhill with a 6-foot-2 frame. Coakley’s slider showed sweeping action when located low in the zone, giving him a secondary pitch he can rely on. The Fieldhouse Pirates righty has been a breakout arm and it will be interesting to see how he performs once he gets outside regularly.

Jack Mount RHP / OF / Gloucester, ON / 2020

Report: One of the biggest surprises of the week was 2020 RHP Jack Mount who played for the Fieldhouse Pirates. Mount is an athletic 6-foot-1, 165-pound arm with quickness allowing him to register 87 mph velo’s. He threw in three games and maintained his velocity throughout the week. Mount’s breaking stuff is developing, but with arm-speed show promise. With a lack of current strength, he could make big jumps in the future, and we look forward to seeing more of Mount in the summer.

Bennett Moore RHP / 1B / Goderich District Collegiate Institute, ON / 2020

Report: A tall 6-foot-6, 185-pound arm, Moore is a very projectable and exciting Ontario Nationals prospect. The righty features an arm stab out back and comes forward from a high ¾ arm slot throwing his fastball up to 84 mph. He threw downhill, making for an uncomfortable at-bat for any hitter. Moore has the potential to develop into a imposing arm in the 2020 class and with strength gains will do so. Moore rounds off the All-Tourney pitching staff from Spring Training in Orlando.

MVP

Jacob Douglas C / 1B / St.Marys, ON / 2019

Report: The MVP of the tournament was no one other than Jake Douglas. The right-handed hitter not only was a shoo-in for the All-Tourney Team but was the best of the bunch. Douglas’ raw power showed up in game and in a large way, none bigger than his crushed home run. It was a great week, and Douglas was the face of the tourney.
