Catholic League Championship Roundup

The Catholic League held its two championship games at Comerica Park yesterday.  In the A-B championship game, Bloomfield Hills Brother Rice faced Detroit U-D Jesuit.  In the C-D game, Bishop Foley faced Allen Park Cabrini with a chance to break a streak of two consecutive losses in the championship game.

A-B Game

Brother RIce took the lead in the third inning against U-D Jesuit and that was all sophomore ace Matt Ruppenthal needed.  Ruppenthal, the Vanderbilt commit, showed great command of his curveball and was consistently high-80s with his fastball the whole night.  He went the distance, only giving up two hits and striking out twelve (five of the first six he faced).  The Warriors of Brother Rice scattered five more runs to finish with a dominating 6-0 victory and capturing their fourth title in eleven years.  The Warriors, now 26-7, have their pre-district game on Tuesday vs. West Bloomfield.

C-D Game

Bishop Foley also had a dominating performance over their opponent yesterday, holding Allen Park Cabrini hitless through five innings.  After scoring one run in the bottom of the first, Bishop Foley blew it open in the third scoring three more runs.  By the sixth inning, Foley was up 10-0 and could cruise to their first ever Catholic League championship.  Senior standout Brett Sunde led Foley at the plate, going 2-3 and driving in three runs.  Fellow senior Brian Bayliss was effective from the mound, striking out eight over five innings.  Bishop Foley, now 34-3, will face Oxford on Saturday for one last non-league doubleheader.
